Description Originally done in April 2004.

One day I sat down and began to go through various .PSD files looking for inspiration. As had become my usual process I turned on Justin's (Edgen) music and began to feel a story. The track is entitled "The Rise and fall of Middle Earth" and can be heard here [link] under the "Vocal" section. A brilliant piece that captured the mood for what would become the heart of this piece. I highly recommend downloading the track and listening to it as you view the image. See if a greater story builds from the meger bit that I shared in the typography of the work.

As I browsed and listened I came across the original .PSD file for "Dawn Away From Home". The lighting in the scene grabbed at me and as I viewed the image with the music I felt the story take shape. Sad, Tragic, and simple but yet rich in it's ideal. I realized that armed with new techniques since Dawns original inception I had a new ability to push the work intot a new area. I was always in love with the planet surface in Dawn. While it's not realistic per say it lends to an illustrative quality I've had a hard time putting into words. It reminds me of the illustrative style found in children's books in some ways. So I knew that I could build my story around the scene.

I set to work and only after perhaps 2 hours of concentrated efforts and listening to the track on repeat over and over again I created a visual to represent my story. To be honest, I've always been influenced by music in my work since I created this piece. I recall several times where the story over-whelmed me to tears. Simple but complex. I found myself sitting for minutes at a time gazing at this piece from time to time. I can see the mothers face as the boy's eyes met hers. I can see his eager innocence address what he says. I'm sure he was awed by the light and even perplexed. Aware of this I'm sure the mother hid her fear of the impending end and smiled confirming his words. Man what a feeling one would get watching death come like that. An entire planet wiped of life. Makes me wonder what other scenarios unfolded on other parts of the planet.

Hmm.

Well, this is Romancing the Light. Hopefully the ideal behind this work speaks more than the work itself.
