Description Scene from "The Old Curiosity Shop". Bored out of his mind, Mr Swiveller corners the little nameless servant, dubs her "The Marchioness", and teaches her to play cribbage.

Done in pencil.

...don't talk to me about Victorian table legs.

This is excellent too. Dick Swiveller saves the day eventually eh?

I'm so happy someone has drawn good ol' Dick. And the Marchioness! What a wonderful book and such wondeful characters. For whatever reason I could never get the scene out of my head where Mr. Brass "dismisses" Swiveller, and Swiveller keeps poking his head in the door and staring Brass down. You've done a great job, and brought back some pleasant thoughts!

Thank you so much!
I loved these too - in terms of emotional investment, they quite eclipsed poor Nell and Kit in my eyes!
All the bits with Swiveller-turned-clerk were hilarious. I seem to remember Brass asking him about whether he'd seen his pencil, and him babbling something ridiculous about seeing a stout pencil-case in the streets in the company of an "elderly penknife and a young toothpick". He was my favourite from that point on.

I love TOCS and your sketch of these characters [my two faves] is wonderful. I love how adorably awkward soon-to-be-Sophronia looks.

I know, right? They're so adorably quirky! (And a LOT more interesting than Little Nell, to be frank. But then Dickens always writes better side characters than heroes...)

Thanks so much!

That's so cute! I LOVE Dick Swiveller and the Marchioness. I believe they were the highest points in that heartbreakingly depressing book. (Not that I didn't love it.) They're one of the cutest Dickens couples ever.

EEHEE I KNOW EH?
I love the way that the small servant just sort of hovers in the background for the first part of the book and then gradually becomes the most endearing thing ever. And how Swiveller goes from being an absolute wastrel to being a sort of hero by the end.
They were both just a lovely little surprise.

You preach gospel, sister.

Another one of my favorite Dickens couples was Wemmick and Miss Skiffins, in "Great Expectations". He was such a weird, funny character to begin with, and I loved the way they got married. "Halloa! Here's a church! Halloa! Here's Miss Skiffins! Let's have a wedding!"

THAT WAS LIKE MY FAVOURITE PART OF THE BOOK.

...that, and the part where Herbert challenges Pip to a bout of the old fisticuffs.

Bahaha! I love that part. Herbert is one of my favorite characters fron ANY Dickens novel. He's such a sweetheart. Frankly, he deserves a better friend than Pip.

Thank you so much!
Quirky is exactly the right word for them. They're probably one of the most adorable couples Dickens ever wrote.
