Description A trio of velociraptor mongoliensis pause their roaming to consider the storm approaching.

I want to thank ~TheMorlock , =ChrisMasna and *DanArcane for their assistance in critiquing my previous raptor pieces. They helped a lot in the details of this work.

The models in this picture were entirely made in Zbrush and composites and edits done in Photoshop.

Here is a screen capture of how the model appears in Zbrush, without global shadowing.

Here are some detail shots of the model.

Great job. I agree with Tomo, this got to be the best 3D dromaeosaur Ive seen so far. Also I like how you made the tail feathers, thickly feathered at the base with moderately small caudals on the tip. Probably more realistic (at least in eudromaosaurs) than the usual super thin tails with big fans.

Damn, this is superb! I honestly thought I was looking at a diorama, and while that doesn't say much for the lighting (I read your above comments about that struggle), it says a lot for your rendering. Those textures are totally convincing.

I don't think you necessarily have to muck with the lighting in zbrush to improve upon this piece outside of maybe softening the shadows. Just a little airbrushed atmosphere to provide an effect of upset dust and atmospheric movement would go a long way. The overall lighting is definitely too dark for my monitor, at least, but a bump in contrast and curves would certainly do the trick.

Since I'm not as good at descriptive critiques as I am demonstrating, I took a stab at it in Photoshop. I really hope you don't mind! Take a gander here . The shadows still look too stark to me, though. Maybe that can be remedied in zbrush.

Really great animals. Cool and probably realistic plumage too. One complaint though. The scene is not very well lit. It looka a bit like a museum diorama rather than a real scene.

Thank you very much. Yeah, I was struggling with the lighting in this piece. Zbrush doesn't have directional lighting like other 3d programs so I had to improvise with the matcap lighting. I need to find a better workaround for the next piece.
Is the image too dark looking to you?

I see, I didn't read very carefully how you did it. In a more general rendering program I guess it would be easy. I don't own Zbrush so I am quite ignorant about what it can do. I mostly think that it looks a bit lame with no highlights anywhere. It is a dramatic scene and the critters look really great so I think they deserve a little more dramatic lighting.
