This is a novelization of the final boss battle in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I do not own Sonic or any of the characters mentioned below, all rights belong to SEGA, etc etc...

…And now Sonic saw something rising out of the monolithic shadow, and as he stepped back, Doctor Robotnik’s eggmobile rose out of the ruins like some hideous fat phoenix. An immense grasping claw dangled from the underside, and attached to the claw…

“He’s still got it!” yelled Tails.

Sure enough, the Master Emerald was now hanging from the bottom of the eggmobile, not attached to any weaponry save for the claw… and now a tremendous rumbling sound shook the catwalk they stood on…

“It’s going to collapse! Sonic, the Master Emerald was powering the entire Death Egg! Without the emerald in place…”

Without another word, Sonic and Tails ran after Robotnik, who was swooping away just over the catwalk. The sheer weight of the Master Emerald kept Robotnik from ascending more swiftly, and now he veered to the left as a massive chunk of twisted machinery roared down from above, missing him by inches. The Death Egg was falling apart, every nut and bolt and beam of the world’s largest war machine was raining down to the Earth below… including the great catwalk Sonic and Tails still ran across. The Death Egg’s still-functioning artificial gravity was all that kept them from joining the hellish maelstrom of machinery crashing down about them all. Robotnik’s greatest brainchild was dying at last… and the doctor was fleeing the destruction he’d caused as swiftly as possible, the Master Emerald still in his grasp. A hideous cacophony of shrieking metal and exploding engines, of hissing wiring and snapping bolts, it all melded as one and tore into their ears. Sonic jumped high, and his spines smashed into the Eggmobile’s underbelly, damaging it… A helicopter-like thrumming beat into his ears, and now Tails was beating his namesakes against the machine, his face contorted with effort… but it was not enough, just not enough! Robotnik snarled in rage, and began to ascend…

“No! Get back here, you coward!”

…but Robotnik was out of reach now, leaving the hedgehog and the young fox far behind, giggling madly as the Death Egg fell to pieces around him, as the catwalk began to collapse under Sonic and Tails’s feet...
