Description This is the second of my two "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" final battle pieces.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sonic ran after Robotnik, his eyes bulging in shock and anger. He’d never suspected Robotnik was this fast… but he wasn’t as fast as Sonic, the hedgehog was catching up already…

…They were entering a long hallway now. The right wall was a series of featureless steel-gray panels, but the left wall featured a long series of windows looking out over the Earth below. The ceiling was ridiculously high, and stretched over them both in a great vaulted dome.

With a triumphant shout, Robotnik leapt through the air, and planted himself firmly in a small chair set in the center of the long hallway. Sonic dove for the madman, curled up and ready to strike…

…something massive swung up and over the chair, and Sonic rebounded off the great structure. He landed on his feet on the steel floor, and glanced up in confusion as an immense orange-and-yellow machine – with Robotnik inside – began to rise out of the floor.

It was a massive humanoid, roughly twenty feet tall. Its main body had a spherical build, not unlike Robotnik’s own. The resemblance to the doctor didn’t end there, though. The massive machine’s face was dominated by a great steel mustache, painted the same dark reddish-brown shade as Robotnik’s, and cold, dark eyes peered out over the mustache so similarly to the doctor’s sunglasses…

“Is this some kind of weird scientist joke?” grumbled Sonic.

“No, hedgehog. Just the perfect shape for combat. A joke would be ‘what’s small, blue, and about to get crushed?!’”

With a great roaring of pistons and gears, the giant mech stomped menacingly towards Sonic.

“Give up? You're about to find out! HA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAA!”

A high whine filled the air, and something roared into life behind the robot. A tremendous blast of fire and smoke filled the air, and the giant mech roared up into the air.

“A jetpack? Who actually uses those things?”

“All the better to crush you with, hedgehog!”

The immense machine reached the top of the room, and an instant later – the jetpack died.

“Oh-oh…”

The great machine began to fall, with tiny repulsor rays roaring out on all sides to keep the machine on an even keel. It was obviously going to land on its feet…

…directly on top of Sonic.

If he didn’t move away.

Sonic yawned as the machine slammed down a hairsbreadth from his nose. “Overkill, much, Doc? That was just silly… GAH!”

The robot’s left arm – tipped with spikes instead of fingers – had detached itself from the rest of the machine, and now sped towards Sonic, propelled onwards by some unknowable magnetic force. Sonic leapt aside in an instant, but the arm barely clipped his right ear before whipping back to become one with the machine again.

“Simmer down, buddy – HEY!”

The second arm lashed out, but Sonic was ready this time. Leaping high, he let the massive arm rocket beneath him…
…and then landed on top of it as it rocketed back again!

Sonic the Hedgehog lunged forward, curling up into a ball once more. His spines sliced into the metal on the robot’s wide torso… denting it, scraping it, cutting it – but not breaking through. Sonic landed on his feet, his eyes already roving over the machine's massive body…

“All right, a few more hits oughta… AAARG!”

The great machine was lurching forward on its two powerful legs now, and the right one missed Sonic’s nose by a millimeter. Sonic leapt up, bounced on one great knee… and his spines tore into the mech once more.

“Hold still, you little rat!”

“You first, Ro-butt-nik!”

The arms lashed out again, but Sonic was ready this time. Dodging the first arm, he flung himself at the main torso again.

This time, he struck home.

The metal bent, warped, and finally broke under Sonic the Hedgehog’s strength, and now he was inside the machine, spinning and hacking and whirling and rebounding off the great robotic innards, and the massive mech was falling apart, its arms and legs crashing down in a heap as a mechanical voice echoed through the base…

“Death Egg Defender Mech 18 has failed… Energy Override systems have been overridden… Death Egg propulsion systems failing…”

“NO! You little imbecile, what have you done?!”

“Busted your base up, by the sound of it. This is gonna hurt you more than me…”

Sonic ran off, past the collapsing machine, and he heard something explode behind him. He didn’t look back, he felt the heat on his spines as a wall of flame rocketed towards him, and now he was sprinting towards a small porthole at top speed, and…

There was a tremendous crash as the porthole splintered…

…he was out.

He was outside the Death Egg, and it was falling, but not as swiftly as he… and now a tremendous bloom of light tore into his eyes… He could breathe, but only just, and the cold was incredible, he felt frost forming on his spines and his fingers… he couldn’t survive a fall like this and he knew it…

…but he still had seven aces up his sleeves.

On the beach of West Side Island, Miles Prower gazed up at the immense fireball that had consumed the Death Egg. He shook his head in despair. If Sonic was still up there…

…someone had to help him.

He turned, and stared at the Tornado. The little red biplane rested on the western end of West Side Island’s makeshift Bush Airport – a single long, flat field with meticulously mowed grass as the only vegetation. The plane was full of fuel again, as was the rocket booster on its undercarriage. He strode up to the plane without a sound, clambered into the cockpit, and began to flick switches one after another.

“Landing lights on… fuel mixture at eighty percent… brakes off… propeller at full throttle… all right, here goes everything!”

The Tornado swooped off into the blue…

Sonic the Hedgehog was seventy thousand feet above the Earth’s surface, and dropping like a brick. With a little grin, he pulled the seven Chaos Emeralds from their hiding place, and they began to circle around him in that familiar spiral. He felt the change within him as pure Chaos energy began to flow through his veins…

CRASH!

As though the ghost of Robotnik was still determined to slay him, a tremendous steel I-beam roared down from the dying Death Egg, and slammed a single Chaos Emerald out of the circle!

“No!”

Sonic stared in horror as the little emerald spun away into the clouds below… the remaining gems fell into his hands, and Sonic instinctively stowed them away… but it was already too late.

This was it… there was no way he could survive this… The clouds were parting beneath him, he saw the ocean below, and the last thing he saw would be…

…a red plane?

WHUMP!

“Hi, Sonic!”

Sonic shook his head in confusion. The air was still whipping his spines into a frenzy, but now it was in his face… because he was no longer falling.

He was flying!

He was sitting atop the Tornado’s upper wing, and Miles Prower was smiling up at him from the cockpit. A single Chaos Emerald was in his hand.

“You want this? I snagged it on the way up…”

“Tails, that was incredible!”

Tails grinned.

As the incredible light above them faded, Sonic and Tails scanned the bright skies about them, looking for something that would betray the presence of Robotnik’s flying fortress… but there was nothing. Sonic shook his head. He’d swear the scientist was dead, but he’d thought so before… for an instant, his mind plunged into the dark memories of a place called Scrap Brain Zone, and the sight of the mad genius plummeting into its depths…

“Sonic, are you all right?”

Sonic’s face suddenly broke into a grin, and he glanced down at his best friend.

“I’m just great, Tails! We did it! We beat Robotnik! Again!”

Tails laughed as he banked the Tornado around, and the red biplane roared towards the Coast of West Side Island. Sonic grinned to himself as the Chaos Emeralds rose about him, spinning around in an ever-tightening circle, until…

There was a sudden flash of golden light, and Tails blinked. When his eyes reopened, there was an afterimage of something brilliant tearing towards the shore.

Tails smiled to himself as Super Sonic blazed away.

The Death Egg was gone.

His best friend was safe – as was his home.

And in the end… that was all that mattered.

Re-Done! Did it from scratch, but I'm much happier with this one.
