This is a novelization of the final boss battle in Sonic the Fighters. I do not own Sonic, Robotnik, or any of the characters mentioned below, all rights belong to SEGA, etc etc...

As Metal Sonic collapsed within the bowels of the Death Egg 2, a hundred lights and sirens went off all around Sonic the Hedgehog. As he glanced about in confusion, a massive screen lit up upon the ceiling of the room.

A familiar face filled the screen, his bald head gleaming in the artificial light, his auburn mustache bouncing up and down like a shaggy, hyperactive porcupine as he spoke.

“Congratulations, hedgehog! You defeated Metal Sonic – I didn’t think you had it in you!” cackled Robotnik. “Unfortunately, you don’t seem to have realized that his programming contained the self-destruct codes for the Death Egg 2, set to activate themselves as a failsafe in the event of his internal motor systems failing – and the only way out…”

Sonic felt the floor drop away beneath him, and he fell into another room below.

“…is through me.”

The next room was a crimson hue, and sparsely decorated save for a single massive timer on the wall. It was counting down the seconds… from 15… 14… 13…

…and then a steel door on the far wall, the only other major decoration in the room, rattled up into the ceiling on titanium rollers, and Dr. Robotnik roared out, propelled by the rocket boosters in his newest machine.

It wasn’t particularly large, and like the rest of the Death Egg 2, seemed to have been cobbled together on a shoestring budget. It was fairly nondescript, save for the two short legs that slammed into the ground as the thing’s rocket boosters died away, and the two long, horseshoe-shaped arms that lashed out and around to strike at Sonic the Hedgehog.

12… 11… 10…

…and even as he leaped high to avoid the machine’s attack, Sonic closed his eyes, his heart and mind concentrating on the very core of his being… and then the Chaos Emeralds were there, they were all around him, and even as Robotnik blanched in horror at this unexpected development, Sonic’s eyes went wide, a burst of light filled the room…

…and Super Sonic stood before Dr. Robotnik, his crimson eyes blazing with power, his golden spines standing on end, crackling with raw, undiluted chaos energy.

9…8…7…

Super Sonic tore into Robotnik’s machine, his fists tearing through reinforced steel and shredding silicon into powder as Robotnik flinched away from the hero’s unstoppable power… the contraption let out a high whine as Robotnik keyed one desperate command into its control system, but the arm that snapped out to strike Sonic snapped itself in two against his side…

6…5…4…

…and now Super Sonic lunged directly towards the machine, slamming into it, through it, and past it, shooting out of the room like a golden missile. He moved like lightning, tearing through the halls of the Death Egg 2, his eyes darting back and forth, seeking a familiar tunnel… and he almost missed it, but in the next instant, he was back in the Space Fox, and now his chaos energy was spent, but it didn’t matter… he was glad he hadn’t fully shut the rocket’s engines down, because now he was tearing away from the massive battle station as…

3…2…1…

The blast slammed into the back of the Space Fox, and Sonic had the sudden, awful impression that he’d been kicked in the head from behind, but even as the light faded from the blast, he couldn’t help but grin.

Twisting in his seat, he saw a thousand chunks of steel and concrete and titanium shooting in all directions at once, propelled away by the massive explosion. For an instant, he could have sworn that one piece of debris had taken on an orange glow in the distance before speeding off with a second chunk in tow…

…but it didn’t matter. Robotnik’s Revenge had been foiled, and now all that remained was Sonic the Hedgehog’s trip back to Earth.

…if he could figure out how to land this thing…
