This is a novelization of the final boss battle in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I do not own Sonic or any of the characters mentioned below, all rights belong to SEGA, etc etc...-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sonic and Tails tore along the massive steel walkway, past the glow of a thousand stars still glimmering through the Death Egg’s thin artificial atmosphere, just a few steps behind Robotnik. The mad genius was far swifter than they’d expected, but still…
Sonic grinned. It was all over now. He was just three steps behind…
Two steps…
One step…
CRASH!
Robotnik had swerved off to the side at the last possible moment, and leapt into an immense steel dome that jutted out from beneath the walkway. A smooth mechanical door slammed shut behind him, and Sonic slammed into the metal like a bug hitting a windshield.
The blue hedgehog bounced off, and shook his head in frustration. “Ugh, not again! I hate these escape pods.”
He ran his hands over the machine’s smooth surface, and tried to think. “Hey, Tails, you got any ideas for getting in here? I don’t think the Spin-Dash is gonna cut it… Tails?”
Sonic turned, but Tails was already on the opposite side of the dome. He knocked on the metal… then froze, his eyes wide in horror.
“Um, Sonic?... you might wanna… come over here… for a second…”
Sonic was next to Tails in a flash. “What is it, buddy? Ro-butt-nik got your tongue?”
Tails simply pointed to the side of the dome. He was shaking like mad.
Sonic glanced over. This side of the dome was not smooth at all. In fact, a big red chunk of the thing bulged outwards like a nose… and above it, two great dark swellings, like tremendous eyes, stared down at them both.
It looked like a human head…
And beneath it, the largest combat robot Sonic had ever seen was slowly coming to life.
It looked like the massive humanoid mech he’d faced when he’d first entered the Death Egg… but this was larger, so much larger, at least a hundred feet tall, and the thing’s gigantic metal hands were now rising up towards the platform they stood on.
“Oh, that’s all?”
“Yup.”
“You wanna do the honors?”
“How about we do it together?”
“Got it. Three, two, one…”
And as one immense steel hand slammed down onto the platform, Sonic and Tails whipped around, and began to sprint away at top speed… but as though Robotnik was reading their minds, a second row of great fingers slammed into the catwalk before them.
They were trapped.
“No! No! How do we beat this thing? The Super Emeralds aren’t ready yet!” yelled Sonic.
Tails shook his head, then dove past the other massive fingers as they roared down to crush him. “Well, is there any part of it that we can hurt with a Spin-Dash or something?”
“I dunno, is there?”
“How should I know?!”
“Think! You’re supposed to be the smart one, here!”
“OK, OK… wait, remember that big hand-thing we faced in the Lava Reef?”
Sonic leapt aside, his feet missing a huge digit by inches. “One hand! We’re not even facing that! These are just… friggin’… fingers!... man, leave it to Robotnik to make a hundred-foot robot, then try to squish us with the fingers.”
“I know!”
Sonic’s eyes lit up. “Tails, you’re a genius!”
Crouching down, Sonic curled into a ball, and began to spin in place like an immense buzzsaw. Faster and faster he spun, until his spines blurred into one another and sparks leapt out from beneath the blue blur…
As one immense hand loomed over him, Sonic finally rocketed away… spun about… and as he crashed into one of the massive fingers, a high whine came from the bending metal for an instant. A second later, Sonic’s spines chopped through it like a knife through a raw carrot. The immense finger fell away…
High shrieks and pings bounced around the great catwalk as Sonic sliced through one finger after another. In his head, he silently counted as he chopped through the immense digits. One, two, three, four, five…
He skidded to a halt, his eyes darting around frantically. Where was number six? He knew he’d counted six fingers…
“Uh, Sonic…”
“Not now, Tails!” he snapped. Was it above him?
“But…”
“Quiet, I’m looking for that last finger!”
“Yeah… I took care of that for you.”
Sonic glanced up, and saw a grumpy-looking Tails picking the last tiny flecks of steel out of his left tail.
“Oops… uh, thanks, buddy.”
“It’s not over yet! Look!”
Sonic glanced up…
With a tremendous crash, the great war machine tore up into the catwalk itself. Great chunks of the walkway collapsed under the juggernaut’s immense weight, and a cacophony of tortured steel ripped the night sky apart.
Without another word, Sonic and Tails began to run. The catwalk fell away behind them as the colossal mech advanced on them both… a sudden blast of fire tore the air behind them apart, both leaped high, and a terrible wall of flame rolled beneath them both… They landed as one, and winced at the fearsome heat the fire had imposed on the metal beneath their feet… but it was cooling already as they ran, and they couldn’t feel it at all now, though the gigantic mech was still a few steps behind them…
“NOW what do we hit?!” Tails yelled.
“Let’s bop ‘im on the nose!”
“WHAT?!”
With a wide grin on his face, Sonic the Hedgehog leapt into the air, curled into a ball, and aimed himself at the huge machine’s face…
An instant later, he was back at Tails’s side, and the massive robot had a new dent in the left side of its nose.
“You wanna give him a matcher?”
Tails groaned… but now a steel panel had slid open beneath the huge robot’s nose, and an immense Plexiglas lens sat within that hole. Behind the lens lay…
“The Master Emerald!”
Sonic dove for the emerald, and tried to yank it out for a second before…
“Sonic, no! Get out of there! He’s using the emerald to...”
Sonic felt a sudden yank under his arms, and an instant later, he was in the air as Tails lifted him off the ground.
“Tails, what are you doing?! I coulda…”
A moment later, a massive beam of raw chaos energy roared across the catwalk beneath Sonic’s feet. The beam vanished in an instant, but the blackened metal of the walkway stood testimony to its destructive force. If Tails had been any slower…
“…I coulda been killed. Thanks again!”
Tails set Sonic back on the platform, and ran alongside him as he spoke… both still fleeing the gigantic mech.
“Listen, we still hafta get that emerald back. I’ll bet you anything that thing’s powering the mech, if not the whole Death Egg at this point. All we hafta do is knock it away from the power cell it’s probably connected to. If we hit it together, we should… whoops!”
Something burned Sonic’s spines, and he leapt to the side; an instant later, another ball of fire roared past him and down the catwalk.
“All right, so I hit his schnoz again!” yelled Sonic. “Then we both go for the emerald!”
“Right!”
Sonic leapt into the air, his spines sliced into the colossal mech’s nose, and as he dropped down, the panel slid open once more…
As one, Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles Prower leapt into the air, curled up, slipped through a tight spot around the rim of the lens, and slammed into the Master Emerald itself. As they slammed into the ancient gem, a tremendous screech of tortured metal echoed from deep within the mech. As Sonic uncurled, he saw that the immense jewel was now tilted, just a little… just enough.
An impossible surge of chaos energy ripped through the gigantic machine. Thousands of lines of programming, millions of wires, all were torn into slag by the power of the Master Emerald. The Death Egg’s greatest champion was falling now… falling into the dark recesses of the battle station, and with it, the greatest scientific genius the world had ever known…
