Description From the journal of Dr. Alice Mitchell:

"Among many other unusual traits, I have discovered that the African Graboid subspecies has similar β€œgrabber-tongues” to the American variety, but amazingly, the tongues seem to have individual intelligences of their own, and are capable of separating from the original Graboid to attack and subdue prey that may try to take refuge on higher ground before returning to the main body."

-Reality check: This is one of the Grabbers from "Tremors 5: Bloodlines". I do not own the rights, etc etc...

I interpret these things as being separate organisms from the African graboid altogether; the African graboid lacks tongues, so it has a symbiotic relationship with these "grabber" creatures in order to survive.

Not a bad idea, and I'd accept it, except the Arctic Graboids from the newest movie look nearly identical to the African Graboids, with very similar-looking tongues that don't detach.Β

The arctic graboids are likely just weaponized individuals of the African species. I'm guessing that the grabbers didn't leave the body because it was too cold out.
