Description

December 31, 1959:
This gargantuan amoeba-like entity arose from the middle of the oily Martian lake found by the crew of MR-1 as they approached a Martian city on the other side of the lake. It attacked the small inflatable vessel that the astronauts were paddling across the lake in. Though it moved slowly, it was totally relentless, and it pursued the astronauts all the way back to the MR-1 rocket. It surrounded the rocket, and managed to snatch Jacobs up and absorb him. Col. O'Bannion had a tiny bit of it land on his environmental suit, and it somehow got onto his arm as he was taking it off, and the mess on his arm is what the thing grew into in a month's time. The rocket was sealed, and an electrical charge was rerouted through the hull, electrocuting the being. Dr. Ryan has made the suggestion to give a small shock to O'Bannion's arm and prepare a tissue culture as "bait" nearby so that the thing could be shocked off of the man, and onto the culture so that a more massive jolt could completely kill the monster without harming the Colonel. I have high hopes for this attempt.

A recording has been found on the last bit of tape. Apparently, it is the voice of the Martian society itself:

"Men of Earth, we of the planet Mars give you this warning. Listen carefully and remember: We have known your planet Earth since the first creature crawled out of the primeval slime of your seas to become man. For millennia, we have followed your progress. For centuries, we have watched you, listened to your radio signals and learned your speech and your culture, and now you have invaded our home. Technological adults, but spiritual and emotional infants, we kept you here, deciding your fate. Had the lower forms of life on our planet destroyed you, we would not have interfered, but you survived. Your civilization has not progressed beyond destruction, war and violence against yourselves and others. Do as you will to your own and to your planet, but remember this warning - do not return to Mars. You will be permitted to leave for this sole purpose. Carry the warning to Earth - "Do not come here." We can and will destroy you - ALL life on your planet - if you do not heed us. You have seen us, been permitted to glimpse our world. Go now. Warn mankind not to return unbidden."

Update, August 19, 1964: Apparently, the infamously xenophobic, insular Martian society is a relatively recent arrival to the red planet. The young "Martian" woman who claimed that King Ghidorah obliterated all life on Mars after his attack on Earth 65 MYA also said that she had been chosen, and her mind enlightened, by the modern Martians. They used a handful of ruins and remains found on the red planet when they arrived from their dying homeworld in deep space to reconstruct certain aspects of the original Martian society. They knew King Ghidorah was returning to Earth soon, and feared humanity might overrun Mars in an attempt to flee from the King of Terror. Humanity is still flatly barred from landing on Mars or from approaching it, though human exploration beyond our stellar orbit is, in her own words, "Inevitable." Oddly, she also mentioned a visit from a human from Earth in 1910, a completely impossible feat.

Update, March 25, 1967: A number of saucer-shaped UFOs have been sighted in a rough orbit around Mars. The FAFC has decided to launch the starship AAB Gamma to investigate the area, making sure not to get anywhere within 500,000 kilometres of Mars itself.

Update, September 15, 2009: Fifty years after the Martians issued their ultimatum to humanity, and 45 years after the mysterious appearance and disappearance of dozens of Guilalanium-based flying saucers all around the Martian orbit, several organizations have begun a much-publicized project to scan and map the entire surface of Mars through a new telescope system. Apparently, the project was inspired by the second arrival of a Guilala on Earth.

Update, September 20, 2009: Initial findings have proven grim. The great cities of Mars have fallen to rubble, the vegetation has burned to ashes, and swarms of massive footprints can be found everywhere. No living thing has been seen on the surface of Mars. The footprints have been identified as identical to those of the "Guilala" creatures that landed on Earth in 1967 and 2008. The patterns of the prints hint that over a hundred such creatures were stomping about on Mars at the same time, and several of those were absolutely titanic even in comparison to the Earth-landed Guilala. Despite this, not a trace has been found of the Guilala aside from the prints, and it remains unknown as to what truly happened out there 45 years ago. An experimental probe is due to be sent to Mars in one week's time.

Update, October 5, 2009: The probe data has returned: Mars is dead. The atmosphere is almost gone, the magnetic field is in even worse shape, and the surface temperature has plummeted to well below zero everywhere on the planet, year-round. Mars is a dead world, with only the collapsing Martian ruins standing testiment to a civilization having ever existed on the surface. With the Xilians having gone extinct in the failed invasion during Operation: Final War in 2004, the Mysterians having vanished to parts unknown after the failed 1967 invasion, the Kilaaks having likewise vanished after the 1999 invasion, and the Selenites having been gone for nearly a century, it seems that humanity is the new ruler of the solar system.

"A Trip to Mars", a truly ancient Thomas Edison picture from 1910.

Pretty good for its time period.

What a shame to see the Sol System reduced to such a state from 5 (possibly 6) habitable worlds to only one remaining world of civilization. Also is the 1910 travel what I am thinking it is, John Carter, if so are you using the books or just the movie?

It's sort of meant to be a tragedy, and I'm glad it came across as such.

Actually, I'm honestly probably not going to try anything with John Carter. The 1910 visit is a reference to the 1910 Thomas Edison movie "A Trip to Mars".

Considering the gravity thing with that universe's Mars compared to what you already have that sounds like a smart idea.

Now that you mention them, what exactly *are* Guilala?

A deeper look into what the Guilala are is coming up soon!
