Description April 29, 1977
A number of remarkable photographs were published in "Time" magazine this week in the wake of the "Jukai disturbance", a small, localized volcanic eruption and earthquake that damaged several parts of the Aokigahara region of Mt. Fuji. Most remarkable among these photographs is the three displaying a pair of prehistoric creatures which were apparently stirred from ancient dormancy by the geologic disturbance. One of them is referred to as a Plesiosaurus, the other as a Rhamphorhynchus.

The former animal apparently dwelt in the depths of Saiko Lake, but had only recently begun making forays to the surface and preying on unwary swimmers. It's believed that it may have dwelt in the deepest part of the lake for untold eons before the lake's acidity and increasing temperatures from the imminent eruption forced it up from the bottom. Eyewitnesses claim that the 20-metre-long Plesiosaur could move about on land like an enormous seal, and was powerful enough to break a tree in half. Very old legends from the area also hint that it may have surfaced in the past; some of the old stories claim that a dragon with "red eyes like the Chinese lantern plant" lived in the lake and would attack people. The creature was last seen in pitched combat with the pterosaur before the volcano erupted, the ground apparently opened up and swallowed them both.

Reality check: this is the Plesiosaurus from "Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds". I do not own the rights, etc, etc...

So, what's the story behind these two? What were they? Another budding ecosystem cut short by the Gyaos?

Indeed; the area was intended as another ecosystem experiment, but the creatures were never released as intended. Over the years, the eggs of both species hatched as the natural systems intended to keep them in suspended animation failed. When the earthquake hit, all the remaining eggs were obliterated.

Kind of a pity that all of the Mahars' lost world experiments seem to fail time and again.

Over time, they all seem to do that. I'm actually covering a couple more of them in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
