The Late Pliocene Period

As the ancient forests retreat, some creatures have adapted to take advantage of the wide-open spaces. Some, like the elephantine Deinotherium and the long-armed Ancylotherium, are traditional grazers. Others, like the saber-toothed Dinofelis, are fearsome predators.

In the Great Rift Valley of northern Africa, some animals from this period can still be seen today, such as ostriches, warthogs, rhinos, jackals, vultures, and zebras.

Yet, it is in this valley that one species of ape has come down from the trees, and is beginning to walk upright across the plains. Omnivorous, adaptable, and fearsomely intelligent, this species of ape is known as Australopithecus afarensis – and its descendants will change the world forever…
