Description Soooo... I can't begin to tell you how much STUFF I put into this. I am so drained right now. But I'll try to say some of the thoughts bumping around in my head because I was planning to anyway. Also, I've started uploading 900 pixel wide versions (the original of this one is over 3000 pixels wide) instead of 800. Let me know if this is too big for most screens, I can go back to my old sizing habits.

Right, so this was made for 's Technology and Nature Contest. For those air-heads in the audience, the technology is the train, nature the horse (and surroundings too). I was wandering over to her page to give her credit for the BG I used in Makani's pic, and I spotted this contest. I've never entered an art contest before, but the theme just sparked this idea in me, and I knew I had to enter.

I cut out every single little knob and twiddly bit on that train. Every. Single. Bit. I considered chopping them off, figuring no one would notice, but I wanted it to look good, so I sat there and cut and cut and cut. Normally I get a deviation done in one sitting, I like to work while the idea is fresh. However, I started this one right after Makani, and I knew finding a workable background would be nearly impossible (honestly nearly all the stock images of railroad tracks are head-on shots). So I cut out the train and horse, and set it aside for later. Hours and hours of multitasking that also involved browsing hundreds of stock images later, I had a background and began the long process of tying everything together. I nearly gave up. The foreground was nasty, the colours were washed out, the horse didn't fit (and was missing two hooves). The train, once I managed to fit it to the tracks, now needed to either hide farther back and be obscured by the horse, or it needed to have some partial wheel construction. *collapses on the floor*

Blah blah blah and then I decided I hated the text, killed it, had a stroke of inspiration, and reworked the stock credits so they didn't look so ugly. Many thanks to ~Elminster-ZK for the running critiques.

Yeah, so behind the image:
Here we have an "iron horse" as they used to call the steam engines, and a horse of the flesh. They were both once the primary mode of transportation in society, but as the image indicates they are now both obsolete. Still fun, but not current.

Well, I'll shut my gob now and let the image do the talking.

Edit: 100 faves? Seriously? I'm hugely flattered! I really wish I hadn't lost the PSD file in the hard drive fiasco, or I would totally fix it up and offer a print. But really, it needs fixing. You people are crazy. xD I love you, but could you go favourite a piece I still like? <3

Comments and crits welcome.

I think I like this one out of your gallery so much because of the wonderful concept, and the hard work that went into it. It might be an older piece of yours, but still one of my favorites.

Yes, be nice to hard drives and back up often! I'd say I've learned my lesson but I'm still so lazy about doing backups. At least I have Dropbox to rescue my recent PSDs now.

Ahh, very handy! Unfortunately, I get pretty lazy when it comes to backing up things too. I recently lost a lot of files because my old computer crashed.

adverbial-spectra In reply to 8rhyme-and-reason8 [2011-05-19 19:15:34 +0000 UTC]

Aww, I hate when drives/computers die. Do you use Dropbox? It makes an online backup of anything you put in a certain folder, including different versions of files so you can reverse, say, accidentally saving over the PSD with a flat version. Now I sound like an ad. Oops!

If you're half as lazy as I am about backups, you can sort of protect yourself from your own laziness, since it's automatic. You can find it here [link] .

Thank you! It's very old and I've long since lost the file when my old hard drive died, but somehow it's still one of my most popular pieces. If trains weren't such a pain to cut out I'd do another one!

Thanks! I'm surprised that people like it so much, I look back on my older pieces and want to "fix" them! Unfortunately I lost the editable files for my older work when my hard drive died, which is probably for the best cause I would never be done with them. XD

I really like the mane and tail of the horse.

But I'm captivated with the train. For some odd reason. I like it - I've taken an obsession to it. It's not normal, promise you. But yeah, you did a great job.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

corruptangel315 [2008-11-11 23:20:48 +0000 UTC]

WOW. This is just absolutely AMAZING. To think that you actually cut that whole train photo out, and then blended it with another photo of train tracks... not to mention the background. It all just looks so realistic; I honestly would've thought that the train and the background was all just one photograph. Excellent work!
