Knuckles strolled across the beach, dutifully looking for Smeak's eggs. He sighed... Why had he agreed to help this guy again? Just like last year, he'd managed to lose his eggs again... How many eggs this time? He'd found... Seven, no, six eggs last time... Smeak had never mentioned the other ones--they really weren't cut out to be a parent at all!
Knuckles shrugged. He wasn't cut out to be a parent anymore than Smeak, but he knew, plan as much as you could, no one was really ready for a child. If Smeak needed his help now, no matter for what reason, he would help them. It was the least he could do, he supposed. Besides, it's not like he was actually raising the egg, er... Child.
Ugh! Why was this subject so touchy with him? Knuckles couldn't help but feel flustered by the topic of family every time he was faced with it! Koevit and Leutogi's egg... The one he'd looked after when The Fog had rolled in at the Stump House... Had hatched since then, into a bubbly little girl named Skipper. Knuckles had only seen her recently at Magic School, but if she did so much as look in his direction he'd jump and desperately search for a way to escape.
It wasn't that he was afraid of her or anything, no... It was just... Well... It was complicated! And right now--Knuckles tried to redirect himself--he had other things to focus on! Like that egg floating out in the waters of Staves Cradle Cove.
Egg?!? Knuckles blinked a couple of times, watching the emerald green egg out a little ways in the distance, bobbing ambiently in the water. A shiver ran up his spine; it was just like the one he'd been tasked to find last year... But that made no sense! It should have hatched by now! Right? Right...
Pushing his questions aside, Knuckles waded into the water and swam out to fetch it. Hatched or not, this had to be Smeak's egg! He scooped it up in one claw and turned back towards the shore, and as if he'd been summoned, waiting there in the sand where Knuckles had been only moments before was Smeak.
Knuckles tried not to act surprised. Sloshing out of the water he thrust the egg towards Smeak, a little frustrated. "Here you go. This one's yours, right?"
Smeak was mindlessly digging a hole where he sat. He looked up and nodded, "Yep. That's one."
Knuckles sighed a second time. "How many more do I need to find?"
Smeak was unblinking, "Well, none. You only need one."
A pause filled the air, edged on by the lull of waves and a gentle breeze. "I only need one? It's your egg, take it!" Knuckles pushed the egg forward again.
Smeak moved back just as it got closer to him. "You can keep it. You found it, so..." With that, he stood and began making his way down the shore to someplace else.
Knuckles was astonished! So many emotions rushed through his head: Anger, surprise, betrayal, something else... Smeak couldn't just do this! They couldn't just relinquish this responsibility on him; he'd never asked for this! All Knuckles meant to do was find the eggs, not keep them! This was unbelievable! This was unfathomable! He couldn't-- He wouldn't-- He--
Knuckles realized something as he shifted the egg in his hands... It was very light, actually, almost like it weighed nothing at all--definitely not the weight of a developing stump. Looking closer at the egg's surface... This wasn't an egg, or at least not a real one! It was paper mache...
All of the tension Knuckles was feeling deflated and he actually laughed. Oh... This was just a joke! Smeak was just... Knuckles put it out of mind, shaking his head with a smile. There was something in this egg still, real or not, and he dug in with his claws to figure out what!

Part 2 of the "Smeakled Eggs" quest is now complete! And I managed to write some more story too~~ Knuckles really got duped this April Fool's, huh? Or did he..... We'll see!
I'm happy to have this quest out of the way, but I'm rather underwhelmed by this picture, and the last one too... I tried to make them interesting and different from the Knuckles art I've been doing, but they're just really boring? I don't know... I have a lot of feelings about Knuckles and his story and the art I've made with him, and I'm not gonna get into them here, but suffice it say they're very mixed. It sucks. But on the bright side, I really like the writing for this picture!
