You got me. Given the chance, I would have been much happier in astronomy than physics this last summer. With Apophysis, I usually just set my variables and see what I get and work from there, but I have to admit I lean on the science side of things. Who else would name a fractal after Tesla?

Well, astronomy and physics are closely related, so, what's the difference?

And..., excuse my ignorance, but what (or who) is Telsa?

Aeires In reply to Prometeus [2004-10-04 23:49:01 +0000 UTC]

More of the applications and a ton of formulas in physics.

Tesla was an inventor that worked for Edison for a short while before leaving him and starting his own lab/company. He worked with AC power a lot, masterminded the power generators at Niagara Falls, was awarded the credit for inventing the radio over Marconi, and made the Tesla Coil, a way of transferring power through the air, among other things. Here's an image I made in honor of his inventions: [link] .

Prometeus In reply to Aeires [2004-10-05 01:43:54 +0000 UTC]

Ah, right... It's just that because we were talking about astronomy I thought "perhaps there is a planet called Tesla and I'll misunderstand... you better ask". I didn't know too much about Tesla, anyway, so thanks a lot for the explanation.

And yeah, I saw that image when I wandered by your gallery... Beautiful piece, of course.

Here's some that the Apophysis group posted a long time ago. I haven't read them because I learned the hard way, but they got a lot of great feedback, so they might help. If you ever need any help, just drop me a note also.

You have inspired me to have a play with rotationals, but up till now nothing this cool has appeared, thanks for the advice. I'm a triagle tugger myself, so what you say makes alot of sense, thanks

Aeires In reply to Darkangel764 [2004-09-28 00:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Can't wait to see your rotationals. I believe in mastering the triangles more than anything else. As you start to understand them, you can force the program to do what you want, which yields much better images and eliminates a need for postworking, or severely reduces it. Postworking is good, but I like to have the ability to open Apophysis and render anything upon request instead of scratching my head trying to remember what techniques I used post.

Darkangel764 In reply to Aeires [2004-09-28 21:13:27 +0000 UTC]

I rarely use postwork on my images then it's adding a tube or something, I've never messed with the colours at all. I prefer to do my messing in the gradient window on apo.

Do you know how to change the color weights?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Darkangel764 In reply to Aeires [2004-09-29 08:24:34 +0000 UTC]

Colour weights? I don't think so, all I do is move the slider in the gradient window, until I get what I want. Do you know? I'm the sort of person that likes to learn as much as I can about anything that interests me. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Aeires In reply to Darkangel764 [2004-09-29 13:40:51 +0000 UTC]

You're going to love this. Open the triangle editor and select a triangle. On the right side, click the color tab. Move the slide bar left or right. That changes how the gradient is weighted to that triangle. Usually the first 3 triangles can be changed, but the higher ones don't do much. I've taken a gradient that was mostly orange and brown, but had one narrow band of a really beautiful green, moved the slider bars and made the entire image green by changing their weights. [link]

Thank you. A few weeks ago I made a conscious effort to slow down and only post the absolute best image possible. The only reason I still posted daily last week was I was going through my contest pieces. This was one of those that I submitted but wanted in my own gallery. I still have one or two I might dust off. Thanks for the great comment on this one.

Thanks, Alan. I was thinking about those toys when I was making it. Add to that the celestial parts and that's how I got the name. I remember taping those to my bike when I was a kid and riding as fast as possible to get them to spin.

Aeires In reply to k4m3l [2004-09-24 09:56:49 +0000 UTC]

Insomnia. For me, the key to apophysis is the triangle work. Once you understand how they relate to the image and each other, making great images is so much easier. Everyone has their own techniques, but for me, I'm a triangle man.

k4m3l [2004-09-24 09:35:03 +0000 UTC]

laaaal nice how do you tweak heavily rotation...?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aeires In reply to k4m3l [2004-09-24 09:44:00 +0000 UTC]

With rotations, it's always good to do four things. 1-use the mutation editor. This gives you some really great variations and works best with rotationals. 2-move the non rotational triangles. That's triangle 1 and 2, and sometimes 3. You can tell if 3 is rotational or non rotational by comparing it to the other triangles. If it looks identical to 4 and up, then it's part of the rotational triangle and should be left alone. 3-adjust gradients and gradient weights to the non rotational triangles. Shifting around the color can make certain sections of the rotation disappear, or appear. Simply changing gradients will do that also, so even though you might like the color, sometimes the image will look better with a different one. It also erases hot spots. When I made Tribal Dancer, there was a bad hot spot caused by the high rotation number. I spent close to two hours fussing with the color to eliminate it. 4-repeat steps 1-3 as much as needed.

Not quite, but close enough for my liking. Keep up the good work!

Eynowd In reply to Aeires [2004-09-24 12:10:03 +0000 UTC]

It's not quite the same, as the Eye only has a seven pointed star, whereas your's has an eight pointed one. But it's pretty damn close,

It also inspired me to come up with a raytraced version of the eye (again)
