Description Here is the Mosquito finally finished! The kit is the Revell 1/48 scale de Havilland Mosquito mk IV which was re-released in 2012 with Canadian markings. The Camo pattern is painted after KA114 the only airworthy Mosquito. I decided to build this kit as the Fighter/Bomber version which was one of the greatest aircraft of WWII. Nicknamed the "Wooden Wonder" for its mostly wooden construction. This lightweight construction and being powered by 2 RR Merlin engines made it one of the fastest aircraft when it entered production allowing it to out perform many of the Luftwaffe fighters.

This build I would have to say is one of my better models, again using Tamiya paint which I seem to have developed a love/hate relationship with, lets just say it's either a hit or miss whether it will work out or not. I was quite impressed with how the kit fit together. The only place that really required filling was around where the nose joins onto the fuselage. The canopy was the worst part of the model. It didn't fit well and by the time I had put it on I had already finished painting the model. Taping off for the canopy was a bit tough and if you look close you will see the flaws. Also some of the paint got lifted off causing the paint on the canopy to look a bit jagged, I attribute that to the Tamiya paint not bonding properly with the plastic.

Overall I'm happy with this model and It will definitely be displayed, just don't look too closely at it!

Did you use an airbrush for this?

Nope, no airbrushing here, all of my models are painted the old fashioned way with a brush. The only kit I did use an airbrush on was my F-15.

Well, you did an excellent job painting the Mossie, then! I can't see any brush strokes at all, kind of like on my Corsair.

Thanks very much! Your corsair looks very good, I like the lighter blue colour that you used. The key for me in avoiding brush strokes is to thin the paint out almost 50/50. I find that the paint thinner allows the paint to level out on the model.

That is a similar technique to what I use, except that I use Citadel acrylics, as I find them easier to work with. They come in oddly named colours like "Shadow Grey," which is the blue on the upper surfaces on my Corsair, but they are very good paints.

i haven't heard of that brand before, but I'll have to look them up. I have been using Tamiya paints, but they can be hard to work with. I prefer to work with Humbrol Enamels, I just recently replaced my Tamiya paints with Humbrol.

I used to use Humbrol enamels, but I have found Citadel acrylics to be easy to work with, and with no fumes, which works for me. Citadel acrylics cost about $4-$5 per bottle, but they are easy to maintain and last quite a while. If your paint ever begins to dry up, just add a drop of water.

Everyone has their own preferences I find Humbrol is just as easy to maintain as long as you make sure the top is on properly. Also if it gets thick a drop of paint thinner usually does the trick. Those acrylics seem really easy to work with though.

I made a 1/48 Tamiya Mosquito a little while ago. Decals were a complete disaster! Managed to find some extra RAF roundels from a PV-1 Ventura model I had.
By the way, the DH Mosquito KA114 is owned by a the Military Aviation Museum which is right near me. I'll be able to see it when it first flies in the US.

Tamiya is usually really good when it comes to decals, so that's pretty odd! You've built the Ventura? I'm looking at buying that kit next week and painting it in RCAF colors. I have read that it's a decent Kit.

Thats awesome that you will be one of the first people in North America to see it! They are bringing it to the Hamilton Ontario Air Show this June, I'll be making the trip out there to see KA114 for it's first time in Canada.

The decals I had never really stayed on the model. And they few that did ended up chipping off very easily. I actually just finish the ventura. Best model I've made yet! Not nearly as good as the quality of your models though.

And yeah, my gallery if filled mostly with pictures from the museum that owns the Mosquito. They have over 50 airworthy aircraft that they fly during their big airshow in May. The Mossie should be put back together and ready to fly by then. Clearly the highlight of the airshow. They also brought down the Lancaster bomber from up there in Canada one year too. [link]

A key thing with decals, which I don't know if you have done or not is gloss coat the model, apply the decals and then use one or 2 more coats of clear gloss. This helps the decals stick better and protects them. It also protects the paint! Thats what I do. The way I have always looked at it is if you are happy with the work you have done on the model then thats all that matters! I have only been building for about a year and a half (serious building) most of my skills come from what I have learned from others and reading different articles.

I took a look through your album they have an amazing collection. You are some lucky to live near something like that! The museum that is hosting the Hamilton Air Show owns the Lancaster. It will be flying along side the Mossie!

The Military Museum will be some birds up for the show! The Mossie, Hurricane, Spitfire, Focke-Wulf FW190, and their Skyraider!

That'll be really cool to see the Mossie with the Lancaster plus some other British fighters. They were supposed to fly the Lancaster down to Virginia for the airshow last year but they had some mechanical trouble and couldn't make it. Maybe they'll make it this year so they can fly with the Mosquito!

Its going to be amazing to see that, first time since the 90's. I'll be sure to take some pictures of them together and post them on here! Hopefully they can get her down. Right now over the net year or so they need to get all 4 engines overhauled at a cost of $500,000 each. They are trying to get people to donate and other forms of funding. The airshow will help with that.

Those old Merlins sure don't last long. But, yeah, Hopefully they will be able to get it down here to fly it alongside the Mossie.

Yeah I have to say I was impressed with these revell decals. The gloss coats really work well for decals.
