Description 17 years later, the North American playing field has changed considerably. The New Union was defeated by the GLU and NEF, forcing the weakened nation to break apart. The cost was high for the New English however, the war siphoning precious troops and resources away from their conflicts with the Hudson Republic and the Kingdom of Canada.

The Great Lakes Union, on the other hand, emerged stronger than ever. Taking Ohio and much of Upstate New York, they were able to commit troops to forming the protectorate Republic of the Dakotas. The feuding warlords displaced by the expansion meet in Rapid City, where a fledgling Republic of Lakota is forming an army to resist the encroaching forces.

To the southwest, the Texans had previously been profiting from their close proximity to the mercenary hub of Denver. When they no longer needed those mercs the now unemployed fighters took control of the city and surrounding area to form the Front Range Confederacy, a loose affiliation of almost feudal warlords, in an effort to ensure their survival. They soon began encroaching on Texan land, sparking several small conflicts.

Cascadia and Deseret, meanwhile, have settled their dispute over central Idaho peacably - and while the treaty strongly favoured Cascadia, the negotiators from Deseret were able to hammer out a profitable trade agreement as well as aid against the collapsing Sacramento Union. The taking of northeast Nevada was the last straw for the struggling country, which formally disbanded after their defeat. The cities and counties within immediately fragmented into independent city-states, following the examples of LA, SanFran, and Vegas.

Many of these Californian city-states formed a temporary alliance to deal with the increasingly aggressive cartel leaders in Southern California. Richard Salazar, commander of the allied forces, proved more than a match for the more numerous but terribly mismanaged cartel armies. The local cities heavily romanticized his victories, and he became the first symbol of Californian unity that, years later, would grow in popularity.

The Baja was absorbed by Sonora-Chihuahua, which was moving further and further from their cartel roots. After the remains of old Mexico were taken by the LAU, the leaders in Hermosillo began to step forward as the leaders of "Free Mexico" - a position still contested by Guadalajara in Jalisco. They are even in talks with Texas and their new protectorate, Rio Grande, to resolve the conflict and form a union to protect against futher LAU attacks.

Similar talk is spreading thoughout the Carribean. With much of the Yucatan occupied, the leading Carribean nations - Havana and the Conch Republic - are trying to form a coalition amongst the local warlords to promote stability and oppose possible LAU expansion into the islands.

What exactly is a Dixie state?

"Dixie" is a cultural movement gaining momentum in the Deep South and some surrounding areas, with a goal of creating a national identity for people in the region. I was meaning to get more into it when I started doing more localized maps, but never got around to posting the next map in the series

Conch Republic is moving north, Tallahassee is moving south, the warlords in the middle are trying to put up a fight but are being picked off one by one. I'd stick around if I were you, the Conch Republic is a pretty nice place to be (and spoiler alert, they get Tampa).

Looks like my county makes up the little eastern endmost part of the Republic of the Dakotas, might as well move to the Great Lakes Union. How did the Dakotas manage to get that far into Minnesota bluff country? I've even heard derogatory remarks about "fucking flatlanders" when talking about people who live in flatter land just a 2 hour drive away. We like our hills and valleys a lot in southeastern MN.

The Dakotas was formed by the GLU as a protectorate nation, and much like the Texans, they gave up just a little of the territory under their direct control to help sort of 'sweeten the deal.' I'll admit I didn't know how people in the area would feel about it - I might work this opinion int future developments

How can it not be that bad? It's Mexico, but it's now an iron-handed dictatorship. Plus there are plenty of warlord countries all about, so good luck getting there...

I'm not saying that Mexico is evil, I'm saying that it probably wouldn't be worth the trouble getting there, thanks to the dictators and warlords and whathaveyou.

I haven't thought very hard about Europe or the rest of the world, but what I was thinking is that Europe is, at a glance, more stable. Instead of every country falling apart, most of them are rapidly militizing and forming a pre-WW1-esque network of alliances.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

SuperCJ In reply to Aenek-Lycaon [2012-08-14 15:43:48 +0000 UTC]

Sort of a "first person to mobilize wins" kinda thing, like pre-WWI?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aenek-Lycaon In reply to SuperCJ [2012-08-15 03:59:02 +0000 UTC]

More like first person to mobilize gets the crap blown out of them by the other two, so everybody arming up but none of them want to strike the first blow.

More like three seperate militarized blocs - One consisting mostly of Germany and England (no more U.K.), another with France and Italy, and one more in eastern Europe headed by Romania.

Aenek-Lycaon In reply to EarlofChutney [2012-08-13 00:43:42 +0000 UTC]

Pretty well. They have the second strongest economy of the old American east coast, behind the NEF, and have established hegemony over a few of the smaller neighbouring states after the collapse of the New Union.

Being from the Pacific Northwest (Washingtonian) I suppose giving up Idaho for Northern California is alright. I'm glad we got most of British Columbia, too. We'd also own quite a large chunk of North America's forests; is that a large portion of our economy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aenek-Lycaon In reply to klorel88 [2012-08-12 17:07:20 +0000 UTC]

Initially it was the biggest part, but by this point the technologies industry centered in Silicon Forest is taking the lead. Timber will always be a major staple though, along with agriculture in the Willamette, Yakima, and Snake river areas.
