Description One of the page panels for a storybook contest I joined in way back titled "Sibol at Gunaw". I used pen and ink, watercolors and colored pencils for the particular illustration series.

That's Davao, right? Will send you the book this weekend, and will also email to you the revised, longer english version...

Well, this is as perfect an image of the contrasting twins and the theme of the story as can be projected! So why not make this the cover of the proposed book? In landscape format (but a bit more compressed in dimensions, as in the scene where the goddess is saying goodbye to her sleeping twins), the drama of the story is well presented in this artwork. (With the buwaya and gold bars in the foreground, the picture resonates with the well-known images of Philippine politicians and tyrants.) The title of the book could be placed in the blank space near the clouds, and the names of author and artist in the left lower space. As I told you in my email, I have written an English version of this (hypothetical) mythology, much longer than my original Filipino story SI SIBOL AT SI GUNAW. It is also oriented towards a more mature (high school rather than elementary) audience. So your rather 'suggestive' drawings would just be 'borderline' appropriate, or so I hope! I can no longer use the original Filipino text because Bookmark as my publisher holds joint copyright to it. If you send me your complete postal address, I shall send you a copy of the Bookmark edition of the PBBY prize-winning story (but which I revised extensively for publication), as illustrated by my niece Ronaele. By the way, the intricate folds of the dresses remind me of the masterful art of my all-time favorite, Alfredo Alcala.

Ok, let's make this as the cover of the book. This artwork has eaten me more man hours than the rest of the pages, as this sums up the whole content of the story, to serve like a synopsis for readers as they pick the book. Yes, I like the style of Alfredo Alcala. His style is well evidently inspired by the German artist L.C. Layendecker, who migrated to America and became famous doing covers for The Saturday Evening post magazine thus became a prime mover during β€˜The Golden Age of American Illustration’. You can notice the style of his rendition on the folds of his draperies, and that diagonal strokes to serve as middle tone is present too in the style of Alfredo Alcala. Among my favorite comic illustrators aside from him is Nestor Redondo, of course the legendary Francisco V. Coching. They are the bunch of comic artist during that era that Philippine comics have ever produced. In the more graphic and modern style, I like most the simplicity of Alex NiΓ±o. You can contact me in this snailmail addy: 0387 Evilla St, Purok Neptune, Telaje, Tandag City 8300. Thank you in advance for that book you will send.

Best regards.

~AutumnalDream....thanks...i think you wouldn't like the lord in this character of the story because at the end he losses in the duel between his goddess sister tho he too is a god. I'd say that you were carried by the comments of Mollygrue, but don't be bothered like him because you're not that subjective and judgmental really with it and safely said that it's intentional. Bingo! you're right. Pls read my rebuttal on this to have a clearer view. Thanks again for the praise.

Great work, really!! Lots of details... I want to be the lord xD.
But as mollygrue said... the limbs look a bit... abstract ^^. Don't know if it's intended.

Keep it up!

To Mollygrue...I'm impressed you've noticed it...it's deliberately done as a signature....Are you familiar with the mind boggling works of Eisher? That's the answer to your question...It's a play of optical illusion...cause the woman is a daughter of a goddess..as what this story goes. The hands are clasped and the arms are in between the legs...what you see is that you thought that the arm should be behind the left leg and where the left hand should meet to clasp the right hand. Now I have created an illusion...Hope now that you understand how I've achieved this. Everything in this lay-out have undergone a lot of deliberation to make it this solid. Thank you for your comments.

It's a really wonderfully designed image. I'd like to hear a little about the story behind it.

Also, and I really hate to mention this since the rest of the piece is so solid, the limbs of the girl in green to the very left don't read right at all. They overlap in ways that shouldn't be possible.

With as much as is present in this piece, it would be nice to see it bigger, or perhaps some cut-away details. It looks quite lovely, though.

Yep, it does look a bit small. I'm still new on this site and am not quite familiar yet with the interface. Anyway, I've adjusted the size already. Hope this makes it better to view.
