This is very beautiful. There is nothing like a mothers love for a child. I think you need to work on blending the eyes a bit better, they seem to stick out almost in a cartoonish light, but otherwise this is truly gorgeous.

I love the smirk on the mother's lips. You did an amazing job.

The mother is totally awesome!!! But there is something with the child, which gives me a weird feeling... I think it's the shape of the head.

how does it make you feel

Quaddles-Roost In reply to aeravi [2007-01-31 22:43:30 +0000 UTC]

Warm tones especially in the mother exude love and warmth - somehow the child has a slightly colder, different feel, a need for her enhanced by warmer tones next to her face yet a yearning to expand its horizons...
But don`t take any notice of me have had a weird couple of days, sorry if its not meant to mean that

art isn't about what the artist means as much as it is about how the work itself is perceived.

that's why i love to hear people's interpretation.

thank you for your 2 cents, i appreciate the time and thought.

UntitledArtist-01 [2007-01-19 14:12:18 +0000 UTC]

A cute and interesting perspective, and excellent use of color. Very expressive.
Something about the child's face looks a bit awkward, though- I think the left cheek might be extending too far, as if it should start to angle to the right near the end of the shadow under the eye to reduce the space between the corner of the mouth and the edge of the face. Maybe the left eye should be enlarged a bit, as well.
One last rather small thing- on the necklace, the shadows towards the middle of the painting aren't quite as strong as those on the skin. Just add some darker shadows to those two beads furthest to the right, like that dark blue, maybe, and that should fix it.
It's otherwise excellent, though. Except for the colors (like I said, very expressive), the mother is very realistic, it looks like a lot of time was put into it. A very good work.

thank you, and i appreciate your honest criticism.

one failing of mine is that i've not really had any training in oil paints, so i don't know how to use thinning mediums... can you help me there? a lot of small changes in my paintings would be beneficial, but i want them to be subtle, something i can't do if i have to paint thickly...

UntitledArtist-01 In reply to aeravi [2007-01-21 01:32:42 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty new to oil paints, actually. In my class, they mentioned that turpentine (or a turpenoid, if you want to save money) can be used to thin it, but it makes it dry more quicky, so it's usually used just for cleaning, and that linseed oil slows the drying time.

It's lovely, it's warm and it speaks eloquently of the bond between a mother and her child. Beautiful work. I love how you've used these sort of swirly brush strokes. Only..the child's face for some reason seems a little 'mature'..or is it just me?

WOW! I surprised at the size. Must be overpowering in person. Is the image here framed the same as the original?

aeravi In reply to freesqueeze [2006-06-23 23:52:00 +0000 UTC]

yes. which is why i'm not sure how i'm going to frame it, because cutting off any of the edge, even half an inch, would change the pic completely.
