This is very beautiful. There is nothing like a mothers love for a child. I think you need to work on blending the eyes a bit better, they seem to stick out almost in a cartoonish light, but otherwise this is truly gorgeous.
I love the smirk on the mother's lips. You did an amazing job.

A cute and interesting perspective, and excellent use of color. Very expressive.
Something about the child's face looks a bit awkward, though- I think the left cheek might be extending too far, as if it should start to angle to the right near the end of the shadow under the eye to reduce the space between the corner of the mouth and the edge of the face. Maybe the left eye should be enlarged a bit, as well.
One last rather small thing- on the necklace, the shadows towards the middle of the painting aren't quite as strong as those on the skin. Just add some darker shadows to those two beads furthest to the right, like that dark blue, maybe, and that should fix it.
It's otherwise excellent, though. Except for the colors (like I said, very expressive), the mother is very realistic, it looks like a lot of time was put into it. A very good work.

thank you, and i appreciate your honest criticism.
one failing of mine is that i've not really had any training in oil paints, so i don't know how to use thinning mediums... can you help me there? a lot of small changes in my paintings would be beneficial, but i want them to be subtle, something i can't do if i have to paint thickly...

I'm pretty new to oil paints, actually. In my class, they mentioned that turpentine (or a turpenoid, if you want to save money) can be used to thin it, but it makes it dry more quicky, so it's usually used just for cleaning, and that linseed oil slows the drying time.

Wonderfully warm colours. They communicate the love between mother and child most effectively. Her eyes are beautiful.

WOW! I surprised at the size. Must be overpowering in person. Is the image here framed the same as the original?

yes. which is why i'm not sure how i'm going to frame it, because cutting off any of the edge, even half an inch, would change the pic completely.
