Description Random unicorn ended up as a victim for my experiments... Everything went well until I got a king idea to draw outlines with golden gel pen. Soon it turned out that the idea wasn't so great and the unicorn without those outlines looked better. Too bad there isn't an undo-button in traditional art so I just had to keep on going and outline the whole poor creature.

Well, the outlines don't ruin the picture completely but I really liked it before those lines. So I feel a bit disappointed when looking at the picture now.

But if I never try new things I never learn anything new! After all I found a nice new method for background (paper towel + dryish watercolor) and also learned that I should NOT use golden gel pen for drawings. Just decorate Christmas cards with it.

Tools: Watercolors, colored pencils, white and golden gel pen.

Thank you!
Manes and tails are my favorite parts to draw traditionally.

Oh, I dunno, I kinda like the outline. And I really adore the background texture! I think I might actually like this one better than the salt...but if so, only by a teeny tiny bit. I also love the shine on this guy's eye, too.

Agaave In reply to Cloudrunner64 [2011-07-03 04:34:04 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I am really happy to hear that you think the outline isn't bad!

I also like this texture on the background and it is nice change for my never-ending salt backgrounds! If not my watchers at least I am myself getting bored with them...
So it would be nice to find some new and handy ways to fill backgrounds.

Very pretty! I like the background, it reminds me of fallen leaves during autumn!
The shine on its mane and tail is very, very pretty too!

Thanks a lot!

The technique I used on the background was really nice; there seem to be more and more new stuff you can do with watercolors! And the more I learn the less I know.

Agaave In reply to Eleweth [2011-06-16 03:54:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot hon!

Technique for background was quite simple: at first I painted the whole background with base color. After it was dry I took a dry piece of paper towel, dipped it on dryish watercolor and just poked the drawing with it. After paper towel became too wet because of watercolor I just took a new piece. Rince and repeat until you're happy with the result!

Love the title. Makes me think of coffee...

Anyway, I love this. The colors are sooo beautiful, and unicorn's coat looks so shiny. The way you did the mane and tail - love it! And that background - wow! That's the coolest thing ever.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Ember-Eyes [2011-06-08 17:14:52 +0000 UTC]

Actually I tried to paint the background first with coffee but I think the coffee I like (used left over) is too thin for painting so it didn't give much color. So I just painted over it with watercolors.
Must try to make stronger coffee for painting another time.

Background was experimental but worked surprisingly well. I have a bad habit to test everything on finished linearts - would be much wiser to practice them first on separate paper.

Thank you kindly!

Haha, well in this case, I think everything turned out very nicely! Your experimental background especially. I can't stop looking at all the cool little patterns that it makes.

Yeah, sometimes my experiments are working immediately; sometimes they need a bit more tweaking... Like in this picture [link] where I tried to use leaves as stamps and the result wasn't exactly what I was looking for...

The background looks kind of like fire And the golden outline doesn't look bad! Although it probably looks different in real life.. on the computer screen I can barely see it.

Agaave In reply to meihua [2011-06-06 19:10:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I think scanning made the outlines lighter (and thus better looking) and the shine that shows in the original drawing when light hits it isn't naturally showing in this scanned version. So in the original picture outlines are emerging more.
