When Earth humans ventured through the reaches of the galaxy, they soon discovered that it was teeming with life. Most life was primitive still, but a good percentage were advance enough to travel interstellar space. Humans inevitably met these other space faring races, sometime with good results and sometimes with disaster. Wars were being fought all too often because of the significant differences between humans and certain other species. These wars would often leave the humans in a weakened state from which they needed to recover. Sometimes full recovery was made impossible because an enemy race would see the weakness as an opportunity.

There were some races that had become friends to humans, and some of them decided to rescue humanity from oblivion. They brought their own rulers and dignitaries together and invited the human government to join them in a meeting. There would be four races of intelligent beings at the meeting; a birdlike avian race (on whose world the meeting was hosted), a race of humanoid dwarves that had six fingered hands, a race of aquatic cephalopods similar to squids, and of course the humans of Earth origin. The cephalopods communicated via changes in their skin color and texture, while the avians used complex birdsong. the dwarves were equipped to speak like humans, but there needed to be translators. The cephalopods were able to provide special devices that allowed the different languages to be understood by all involved.

When the meeting was commenced, it was the beginning of the first interstellar alliance. It was quickly agreed that all member races would come to the aid of their allies in times of crisis and war.

This story is set in the same universe as the Prison World story.

The time on Earth was 2280 A.D.
