Description Another item that I've since collected. I've never actually used it as a towel, but that's mostly since finding collectables from the Saban's TLM series (full name Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid Fantasy) is very rare to come by. There is a cel turning up on eBay these days... but I can't really afford it. Maybe some other time.

Anyways! Marina is the mermaid, who is in love with her Prince Justin (love that name, seemed awfully appropriate to a then- 11 year old) and her friend Whinny, who is the seahorse with a loud scream. Although you can't see it, higher up above Marina is the title along with the castle atop the bluffs. This is a pretty long towel, maybe 40 inches long.

Not for sale! I think Marina is owned by Disney now... probably never see all of her episodes. They made 26 episodes, but I've only got about 13 of them on tape. If anyone has the rest, speak up!

UPDATE:  I've got the whole series now, purchased from Slovokia or someplace, and I've made my own DVDs in English only.  Yay.  I am one happy Marina fan.

They licensed everything back in those days.

I mean I never even knew that anime towels were a thing. I have heard of anime character body-length pillows though.

For the american release, they must've thought it was necessary.

You mean they thought it was necessary to sell towels with pictures of anime characters on them?

Kids go to pools or to the beach, and anime companies want their characters to be seen by kids?  I guess.  Have you seen Spaceballs, where they make fun of marketing everything for the movie?  That pretty much sums up the 80s in a nutshell.

I've had this towel since I was born, and its very faded now, but I still use it for all of my swimming trips!

Really?  Wow.
I've never dared use it; I found it online about a decade ago.

Oh. Aren't they precious? Prince Justin is just as cool as, if not cooler than, Prince Eric as he has a potion that can allow him to breathe underwater, AND he went through the original Little Mermaid legend and came out better for it. Whinny trumps any underwater companion, even if she's a little more jealous than Flounder.

Very true - even when Eric is fighting for Ariel, he seems a little bit weak. Sure, he ultimately kills Ursala, but with a ship, not a sword. And in the second movie, Ariel wields the sword, not Eric. He is a little hapless, whereas Justin uses the sword both above and below the waters.

I like Prince Eric a little better in the Broadway version. In that one, he was going to marry Ariel even though he hadn't found his mysterious voice. Not to mention all those digs he made about princesses being too fluffy were kind of funny. But as Grimsby replied, "There is more to a woman than her flutter kick." I agree with you there, old bean pole.

I applaud you for promising that. You're going to love Sherie Rene Scott as Ursula. However, a word of warning: if you're a smexiness fan, Tyler Maynard and Derrick Baskin are a little too delicious much for some people. If you fall for them, don't say I didn't warn you.

Yeah, I know how the too many bills thing goes. If you are interested in buying one for yourself now, there is a BIN one listed, but it's more expensive and the box is in pretty bad shape.

And I also found it for sale fore even more expensive on ecrater:

I'd love to see your book if you can find it.
I haven't bought the first video yet because I paid $1-$3 for all of the others and I've only found the first volume for $8 on Amazon.. so I've been holding off for now.
Well if I can find a store that ships the French DVD's to the US I'll let you know.
Thanks for the compliment. Yours is great as well! I hope you don't mind that we've kind of side-tracked under your picture..

I think just having a photo is good enough. I like tea, but as I'd never use it it'd just take up space around here.

As for my book...

Sidetracked? Where? I don't think I've noticed...

I was actually talking about the Marina book you mentioned. haha! I didn't even realize you were a writer. But that's really cool.
What is your book about? Are mermaids involved?

I said sidetracked, because we're not really talking about your picture anymore..

Oh neat. I only have the Special Edition box. I've been thinking of buying the other one as well, just for the artwork. Are the DVD's in the boxed sets the exact same?
I'll try to get my cels uploaded somewhere once I have all of them. My scanner sucks though, so I hope I can get it to work well.
So, is it actually considered to be 2 seasons? I just thought it was one season that only got half dubbed. I would love the rest of the episodes too. I think the French DVD's are worth buying just for the artwork, but since I have no other way of seeing the rest of the episodes I'll probably end up watching them in French. That way at least I'll see them and get a basic idea of what's going on. I just have to find somewhere that will ship to the US.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agent505 In reply to feedyourleech [2010-06-19 23:22:38 +0000 UTC]

I think they're exactly the same. One of them actually has image art from a different Jetix mermaid (which kinda bugs me) but yeah, many of the episodes are the same.

Maybe I'll post what I have.

And yeah, I'm pretty sure it was considered two seasons - they may have originally aired them as a single season simply due to network restrictions - or because Disney claimed 'foul' - Disney's TLM series came out the following year.

feedyourleech In reply to Agent505 [2010-06-20 02:33:56 +0000 UTC]

I was wondering if the artwork was different for each of the DVDs. The other mermaid one really annoys me too.
I'd love it if you posted what you have.

I'm really annoyed that Disney bought it off the air before it could get fully dubbed, but at least they've released the DVD's now..

I don't remember where I got the pictures from but I saved them and put them on my flickr. I know I have an email that I'll have to dig up with the link in it when I get home. I haven't found anywhere that will ship to the US yet though. If you want to just see the artwork they are near the end in here:

I've seen the tea set on eBay - I had too many bills at the time so couldn't see myself going for it.
Never seen the Playdough one (naturally, they wouldn't call it that.)

I've got the book (Marina's Undersea Adventure) - it's a great storytime book because its supposed to be a personalized story. I forget where I put it...

As for the vids, I'll post a photo of vol. 1. It's the episode Return to the Sea.

The DVD set - that's the same set I've got. The other ones are from the UK - I believe they were as Vol.1 and Vol. 2 but are of the same 15 episodes. I have not seen the french ones, however. (Yeah, I want them too.)

Great collection!

Hm. What did the cel look like? My very first Adventures of the Little Mermaid cel arrived today. It's beautiful. I have 3 more incoming as well. I'm also curious to know if you know of any other items that maybe you've seen, but don't own. oh! And you probably know this already, but I just saw the discussion under your pictures, but there are now 2 DVD boxed sets that have been released with the 15 English episodes. There are also 3 different boxed sets in France. The first is an earlier release that includes all French episodes(the entire series) and the newer two releases have half of the series in each set. The artwork is absolutely amazing for the two later releases! I'd really like to buy them. Just haven't found a way to yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agent505 In reply to feedyourleech [2010-06-19 14:54:00 +0000 UTC]

Yup - I've got both box sets of the 15 episodes of the first season. I also have a paper tablecloth, several figures, and of course this towel.

But a cel? I've seen one once - might've been of Whinnie the seahorse. And it was more than I could afford at the time - not that I wouldn't have preferred a Marina cel over Whinnie.

I'd LOVE to have the rest of the episodes, even if they're in French or Arabic so long as they have subtitles. That second season is better than gold in my opinion.

Agent505 In reply to Sunrise-oasis [2009-03-25 03:56:46 +0000 UTC]

I got the impression that the Fox Kids lineup, which formally showed Jetix, was now owned by Disney. Jetix is a former Saban Entertainment name, which also aired the TLM story.

Of course, I may not be completely correct, but the way I understand it, Saban=Jetixisney, which is now shown on the Disney channel; and Toon Disney, which is lame considering it should really show classic Disney animation; Gummi Bears, Tail Spin, Rescue Rangers and the like. (And of course Marina's show.)

But wait, what do you mean you won't post an episode? Do you have episodes? What titles (either UK or USA titles?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunrise-oasis In reply to Agent505 [2009-03-25 06:07:35 +0000 UTC]

both versions.. Its true that Disney and jetix and saban and all those otheres are combined and owned by disney itself which kinda makes it wrong but I still have the right to say Saban made the series and NOT disney!..
If you type in google Saban's adventures of the little mermaid, you be surprise how many episodes was aired and which episodes are in complete order (by the french episodes)..
Im a huge fan, well sorta, not huge but just a fan who wants to join in a wagon and make sure people remember this anime. its a really lovely show I love with all my heart!..
note: the VHS episodes are easy to obtain!,,,, THE DVD's are sorta hard to find! the vol 2 dvd is THe hardest to obtain due to shipping!..
check them out if you have the time!
