Description This is what has been keeping me so busy lately. I am doing some restoration work on an original 16th century "Black and White" armour for a customer.

Many of the parts of the suit are badly damaged or missing so I am making some replacement pieces from scratch.

The helmet is an original Nuremberg piece from the late 16th century but the buff (face and chin armour) is a piece that I have made and antiqued to match the existing helmet.

Though challenging, it is quite fun matching the hammer marks, dings and scratches of the centuries old original.

grand work...I'd pay a lot just for something of high level of finish as this...do you sell your work on ebay at all? there are heaps of armours there

That's pretty neat. But it makes me wonder how one could see out of it.

Well you can have it! Hehe... I'm kidding, I do love my job.

There is a lot of demand for armour. I honestly wish there were more custom order armourers in the world. I think the main reason there aren't more is that the amount of time involved vs what customers are willing to spend makes it difficult to make a living wage. The market curve is more of a sharp spike hehe.

I have always said that I would rather be poor doing something I love than to be rich doing something I hate

really well done. I dont know anything about metal work, but you really have a good eye. The differences between the new and old are non existent(in my eyes). Could you probably tell if you saw this helmet somewhere on display?

Hard to be honest AND modest on that question LOL!

I can see the differences but I don't think many others would notice anything unless they looked hard. The black surfaces are a little different in bright light. Both pieces have an amber tint to the varnish but the original is a little more yellow and has a bit more of a waxy look.

Though I did antique the inside, the differences are more noticeable viewing them from the back. The original has a few centuries of oiled rust scale that I just couldn't duplicate in a reasonable amount of time.

The rivets on the buff are a little bit larger than the the ones on the helmet also.

I was pretty happy with how it turned out though... More so when I got the customer's reaction

Very nice work, the pieces you added look like they were made in the same time as the helmet itself, meaning the antique-ing is excellent. Great job, it looks beautiful.
