Curiously, the Joker was originally meant to be a one-shot character, with Batman KILLING him at the end of the story. The editor, however, asked the artist/writer to redo the climax, stating that this is a great character. So Joker survived -to murder, rob, and terrorize to this day.

Other one-shot characters that caught on, were : Spiderman, the Metal Men, Galactus.....
