.MAIN QUEST.

The sun rises over the Eastern horizon, the golden hues touch your back and illuminates the landscape around you... your home is just beyond the metal bars. Fellow horses whinny and bang against the metal, just when it seems like you will be there forever, a human opens the gate, "git outta here!" he yells. You and a huge group bolt for freedom. Which way do you run?

➤ Towards the mountain (North)
➤ Towards the grasslands (West)
➤ Towards the meadow (South)
➤ Towards the river (East)

It was terrifying. The two had only been separated from their birth herd for maybe a year or more, and nothing had gone their way since leaving. Many obstacles stood in their path, the world was being ruthless and unforgiving, and this was just the cherry on top of the cake.

“XAVIER,” she screamed, rearing and flinging her legs wildly in the air, her hooves clanging on the metal bars that kept her separate from him. The stallion roared, reacting to his sister’s screams. Many other horses were just as frightened and seemed just as confined, the male practically unable to move more than a few inches either way. He couldn’t see her, but he could hear her, and he could smell her. She reeked of fear, and the stallion’s heart dropped into his gut. At that moment, he regretted bringing her along.

“I’M HERE JENNI, just stay calm!” He tried to reassure her, flicking his tail and glaring at the horses that were either side of him. There was a stallion to his left and a mare to his right. The mare was very quiet, calmly standing there and seemed to be patiently waiting for something. What that was he didn’t know. The stallion however was the complete opposite. He was hysterical, thrashing from side to side and trying to snap at Xavier’s flank and legs. Xavier snorted and snapped back in warning, managing to snag the top of the other stallion’s nose. He squealed in pain and surprise, pulling himself away from Xavier. He kept his distance after that.

“XAV, I’m scared, what’s happening?”

“I don’t know,” he answered back, raising his voice so she could hear him clearly. “But whatever happens, don’t lose me. We’ve got to stick together!”

Flicking his ears, Xavier recalled how they got to be where they were. It was a very rainy night, a storm had been collecting above their heads for days before it let loose, thunder, lightning and rain bucketing down relentlessly on the poor souls under them. The two were alone, well at least Xavier thought, but the storm was a great cover for man on the back of his horse. Before the two knew it, they had ropes around their necks, and their homeland was all but gone. They were placed in a dark square cave that smelt strongly of man. They couldn’t see out nor could they hardly see each other in the darkness. It felt like they were in there for days, but eventually man exposed them to the light, and to this chaos they now found themselves in.

Bringing himself back to the present, Xavier craned his neck and surveyed the area, trying to catch sight of Jennifer. It took a while but he eventually caught sight of her, she was a few pens to the right of him, and although she was clearly distressed, she was keeping herself still and calm. They all seemed to be held captive in a giant shed, four tall walls and a high roof concealing them from outside. The only light was coming out of the huge shed opening, where many man had gathered. Xavier pinned his ears to the back of his head as the group of man dispersed, each one stopping in front of a random pen. A tall lanky man stopped in front of Xavier’s pen, its beady eyes hooded as it smirked at him. “Aren’t ye a fine beasty,” it croaked, clicking its tongue against the roof of its mouth as it raised its hand to Xavier’s face. The stallion pawed at the ground and lunged forward, his eyes flashing as he tried to bite the man’s hand, the man quickly retracting his hand away before he could do so. It seemed to be amused, cackling to itself as he called out to his companions.

“Xavier!?”

Whipping his head around, Xavier watched shocked as the man standing in front of Jenni’s pen opened the large gate, hollering at her to get. She locked eyes with him for a moment, her eyes wide and full of confusion. “GO JENNI, I’LL CATCH UP!” Xavier roared, whinnying after her as she broke into a sprint, racing past his pen and straight out of the shed’s opening. Xavier pawed at his own gate, snorting and whinnying in frustration and anger. The man standing in front of his pen cocked his head as he watch him, calling out to the others. “Seems like this boy fancies that girl you set loose. Let him go ya?”

Xavier reacted as quick as lightning. The moment the latch of his gate was loose he burst through it, causing the gate to swing open violently. The man wasn’t quick enough this time, yelping in surprise as he was knocked off of his feet. Xavier had no time to check on it though, as he was already racing full pelt out the door, squinting his eyes as he burst into the bright outside. It took his eyes a few seconds to adjust, but eventually he found himself outside. With mountains on the horizon and a vast valley ahead of him. He looked around wildly for Jenni, his heart practically pounding out of his chest as he feared for her wellbeing.

“JENNI!? Where are you!?

“I’m here brother, I’m so glad you got out!”

The mare seemed to appear out of nowhere, matching her speed with his as they both thundered further away from man and their shed. Fresh tears were running down her face as they galloped, and Xavier nudged her flank as they ran in comfort. “We’re okay now Jenni, it’s okay. We just need to get some distance between us and them.” The mare nodded her head quickly, flicking her head from side to side to free them of tears. “I was so scared, I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t gotten out.”

“I know,” Xavier replied, looking behind him to ensure no one was following them. So far so good. “But you’re a brave girl, you kept calm like I said. I’m proud of you.” The mare broke out a small smile, her curly hair whipping in the air as they tore through the valley.

A few days later, the two were still keeping a very low profile, only stopping for an hour or so before moving on. Xavier could tell that Jennifer was getting tired, but she kept pushing on, her eyes flashing in determination as she diligently followed. He was lucky to have such a good little sister. They soon found themselves up in the hillside, a forest covering the horizon on one side and meadows spreading across the other. The mountains stood tall behind them, like a looming monster just waiting to come to life.

“Xavier, there’s some horses down by the lake.”

Curious, the stallion stopped and faced the direction Jenni was, and sure enough down the hill by the water was a small group of horses. If he looked close enough he could see a small foal happily trotting around its family gleefully. “We should ask them where we should go,” Jenni muttered, looking at Xavier hopefully. The stallion narrowed his eyes and shook his head, turning away from the group of horses and started to walk in the opposite direction. “No,” he stated, breaking into a trot. “Come on, we’re going this way.”

The mare pouted childishly, saving one last glance at the happy group of horses before trotting after her older brother, breaking into a small canter as she caught up with him. He could be so stubborn sometimes, but she never questioned him. She was happy she had him to follow… She knew she would be a sitting duck without him, she trusted him completely and utterly.

What a scary world and stressful situation for the pair... But luckily, that is over... for now. Who knows what the future holds for the brother and sister, but hopefully it is human free for a little while at least. As the two make their way South, they hear the beat of hooves roaring behind them. It is a mare! The silver amber champagne looks frightened, by what? Who knows... It doesn't seem to be an immediate threat. What will Xavier do?

➤ Let the mare run past, you don't need any unnecessary drama right now.
➤ Get her to stop and see if you can help her, helping her might result in a claim.
