Description 12 hours more or less straight: Started with a pencil and went all the way to the GIMP via a digital photo. "Inked" and shaded using my new technique with the paths tool, which I love~! As always, I'm frustrated with his hair. I also dislike the jawline, and I know the legs are too short and the background is weak. It has been pointed out to me that his head is too small (ugh...) and that he needs more of a butt. I don't know anything about musculature, as is obvious...

Please critique me!

The scars are from his major battles in the Soul Society arc: shoulders = Abarai Renji and Zaraki Kenpachi; arm = Madarame Ikkaku; chest = Kuchiki Byukuya. No references used other than my memory of having watched all of the anime 2x and having browsed a ton of fanart.

Kurosaki Ichigo of BLEACH created by Kubo Tite.
Darn sexy.

Also, why no definition of fingers and toes? ):

To be honest, that stems from several things. This cell shading style is really harsh and adding too many details can look funny, for instance. Also, I'm not great with properly crafting the shape of toes and fingers and I didn't feel like practicing in this particular piece.

Finally, I've got an artist friend whose style I really like and I was trying to mimic somewhat. She gives only vague definition to fingers and hands and it always comes out looking great. I was aiming for that, but didn't succeed. I guess I need to practice more! Thanks for that nudge.

Eh, my favorite part of an image is how hard the artist works on drawing things that are extremely hard. For most people, those would be hands and toes. I love drawing hands and toes, and to see them not depicted here makes me sad. He looks like one of those plastic legos people, you know? Practice makes perfect, they say, right?

Hands and fingers (and to a lesser degree, feet and toes) are very expressive. They can really give life and emotion to a piece, I agree. I suppose I don't really have a good excuse, then

Thanks for the reminder, and the encouragement!

The legs are fine, it's the top half you need some work on.

His torso is really long.

Thank you! I made the background with the "plasma" renderer, if I recall correctly... Then I just desaturated it.

I knew you'd like him! I think I'm finally beginning to understand the sexy-anime-man-in-boxers phenomenon. You were light years ahead of me all along...

There's nothing wrong with the hair... I do think your lines could be less hard--maybe you shouldn't draw straight lines on the computer. Shorts are nice, I also like his expression. Nice job on his shadow!

Wow! Thank you for the criticisms. I've just started working with inking on the computer, so hopefully I'll figure out a way to make the lines softer...

Well I can't ink on the comupter at all... Maybe buying a wacom will help?

aileen In reply to Tyara [2006-03-06 09:00:02 +0000 UTC]

I have a Wacom and I love it! However, I found that it doesn't work very well for what I was doing - I actually prefer the mouse for my inking method. If I use the stylus, it's too sensitive and drops points in the path all over the place, making things too complicated. Other than that, I really like the control a tablet lends. This particular piece was made entirely by mouse.

Tyara In reply to aileen [2006-03-06 09:04:01 +0000 UTC]

Damn... you already have one? (Still on my wishlist). Hmm that's too bad... you can't edit the sensitivity in Options or something?
I hate drawing with the mouse. I admire those people who can.

aileen In reply to Tyara [2006-03-06 09:08:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was effectively tracing with the mouse, as I had a photo of my hand-drawn image. I just bent the path lines around the image until they fit smoothly - which might be why some of them look too straight; I didn't fiddle with them enough.

Yes, you can edit the stylus senstivity. I was too lazy to bother with the option, however, because I like where I have it set for sketching on the computer and didn't want to lose that.
