Description Behind my house, there are squirrels as big as puppies. Someday, I will capture one and mail it to you so that you might enjoy a squirrel of unusual size too. I'll send Band-Aids, because that squirrel will probably bite you, and it will be your fault. When we were six, I tried to teach you that. I tried to teach you that squeezing adorable things with teeth is a bad idea, but you never learned, and I chipped a tooth on your bracelet.
In our river, there is a place where two 16 year old boys drowned. My neighbors fished one of them up in 1979. I don't have any pictures, but I thought you would like to know. I thought you would like to know that actions have consequences.
Behind the playground, the place where you came back to earth is still indented with your shape and soaked with your blood. That tree tipped you over backwards and it was six feet down. You landed on your knees and how you managed to break your nose is beyond me. But I warned you about that. I warned you about that so many times.
I remember when you almost got hit by that car. You didn't look before leaping, well, you never look, but this time it was physical, you running into the street. Death tried to kiss you at 45mph, but you jumped away and hit hot pavement with a wish and a giggle.
Once, we went skiing down my basement stairs on cardboard and sleeping bags because you said your best friend had done it and it was fun. I wanted to kick you for saying that, but you beat me to it later when your shadow was flickering in a strobe light as you turned cartwheels and somersaults and I was gasping for breath on the floor.
I think you almost broke my sternum.
And I've come to the conclusion that you are kind of stupid.

Really really sweet and innocent. I think it really strikes a note that everyone can relate to, which is what makes this piece so charming and enjoyable to read. I particularly loved the detail about the drowned boys. It added an incredible touch of poignancy that gave your words such a bitter sweet edge. Love this!

Congrats on the DD.

great story within a poem, and you really get the frustration of dealing with someone "kind of stupid"

Oh, this is cute! At first I thought it was a parent talking to their (now adult) child, recalling some of the stupid things they did. But it works also as a friend or sibling trying to keep up with the more daring and athletic child.
Thank you for sharing!

This is so nostalgic, so full of childhood memories, and a childish endearment to match.

The imagery is so tangible and so fleeting, like those momentarily lapses in memory brought on by sounds and smells. The innocent, young logic is brilliant.

I love this. <3

This caught my attention immediately, something that not every daily deviation does, and I just wanted to say that I enjoyed every word enough to reread it aloud to my wife who replied "Wow!" at the end.

It reminds me of Heather's work - she of 'queenhrosie fame, though fame is a word to be used somewhat loosely here, and perhaps you've never heard of her and won't see that as the complement I intend.

But words to the effect of "fresh, exciting", and most importantly, "real" are just words that mean an equal amount of nothing, unless I can tack them onto the statement that you indeed remind me of someone who's work I happen to really like.

Like, as in love, in a way that every time I find a new page to enjoy, touches a place not quite like surprise... It's good, this work of yours, is what I simply ought to say.

Congratulations on the Daily Deviation. This piece truly deserves the honor.
