Description This map shows the northern part of Middle Earth at the end of the Third Age.

The northern coastline was drawn by J.R.R.Tolkien himself and it appears in the book of Hammond & Scull "The Art of the Lord of the Rings" (page 70). This is far from the interpretations of another artists, as for example Pete Fenlon and his full world map (published for the roleplaying game MERP in 1982, tolkiengateway.net/wiki/An_Art… ).

The contour lines of moutains come from the "Map of the Northern part of Middle-earth" (Hammond & Scull book, "The Art of the Lord of the Rings", page 202).

The meridians and parallels are determined from a superposition of Middle Earth map and an Europe map (www.tolkiendil.com/essais/geog… )

Note that the sea ice appears at the latitude 60°N due to the name "Ice Bay" and the influence of Morgoth in this region. In reality, in our world, the sea ice is always well above the latitude of Iceland (70°N). The scale is given by the original map of Tolkien (1 square = 2 cm = 100 miles), but obviously the scale depends on the latitude.

Lovely, the north is often ignored!
