Description
This map shows geographic coordinates of Númenor, the island which dominated Second Age in the J.R.R. Tolkien Legendarium.
The latitude of the island (40°N) is deduced from the presence of vine, from the essay of D. Willis [1]. The longitude (30°W) is calculated taking account the proportions of Tolkien's Sketch Map Ambarkanta V [2] and 1100 miles (1800 km) from Númenor to the Bay of Balar. Without surprise, the island lay on the center of Atlantic Ocean, near Azores and near mid-Atlantic ridge (in accordance with K.W. Fonstad Atlas where the ridge is called "Great Rift"). In addition, Azores are a possible location of the mythical Atlantide.
