This infography shows the history of the different maps of the Shire.
I reconstructed the phylogeny of maps by a careful check of the maps as shown in the art book "The Art of The Lord of the Rings" (W.G.Hammond & C.Scull, HarperCollins, 2015).
This investigation reveals that the final map of the Shire (officially called "a part of the Shire") was designed from an older form ("Shire III") rather than a more recent form (Shire IV) drawn bt J.R.R. Tolkien (if my analysis is correct, of course).
