Description Freezing temperatures and snow make no difference to Norwegian State Railway (NSB) Class 18c No 255, in immaculate condition and bulled up (tyres painted red and the fluting on the motion picked out in blue) as it chatters away happily to itself, dragging it's motley collection of wooden bodied stock through stunning scenery near the end of another day.

Helt utrolig. You have drawn the locomotive that made me fall in love with Trains.

She's one of the locomotives that made me fall in love with steam locos too. Saw her when I was 4 years old in Bergen in 1993.

I was 4-5 years old when I traveled with it, have some nice pictures of it to. Ever since the incident I have got some magic inΒ my soul.

Have yet to travel behind her.... some day!!! Wouldn't mind a shot firing her too, see how she compares to the British locos I've fired.

Heheh,I know exactly how you feel. Same seeing her towering over me, gleaming black paint and spotless metal work, and those red tires and the blue motion made a lasting impression on me.

You capture sunsets beautifully, and I really love the detail work on the loco herself, the blue coupling rods sounded challenging.

Thanks! I sometimes think I might over do them, but ho hum, I enjoy doing them. I perhaps went a bit over the top with the detail work but I felt she warranted it. I saw her in Bergen, simmering away quietly in the main station in the main station when I was 4. She was spotless (I've since found out she had only returned to steam a few weeks previously) and had been given the special treatment that some locos in Norway recieved, namely the red tires and blue motion (the colours of the flag), something that really stuck out in my memory, so it had to be included in the pic. I think that brief encounter may be one of the reasons I love steam so much now.

It's always that first one that gets you into it

My first steam encounter was a rather unconventional one, I was 3 Grapevine Vintage RR 2248 'William Davis' was the engine, and her cylinder, being cast iron, developed a very bad steam leak, turns out there was some metal fatigue. I felt sorry for the thing, as a GP-9 had to tow it out of the way.

She wasn't the first, although that was a pivotal moment since it was the first time I really saw and appreciated just how awe inspiring and beautiful a steam loco in the flesh and in steam was. Also, being 4 years old and seeing her from the platform at Bergen which is little higher than rail level, despite being a relatively small loco, she towered over me!

The first encounter was with a Black 5 (44871) at Mallaig in the summer of 1989, I was 3 months old and it is infact my earliest memory that I can pin point. I can remember looking in through the cab window and seeing all the copper pipework and the heat coming from inside.

Bit of an unconventional introduction indeed!

Stunning. What a wonderful setting. Can just imagine riding through the mountains on the last leg of a long journey to the hills, the sun setting and the engine working hard.

Thanks! That is precisely what was going through my mind when I was drawing this.

One word for it then, NAILED!
You can feel the coldness of the scenery too. The engine is the warmth in the picture. Certainly a beauty of a picture.

Cheers!

That is precisely what I was hoping for. Something where you can feel the temperature dropping and just about hear the loco chattering away to itself, the rumble of steel wheels on steel rails and the clatter of rail joints echoing off the hills in the still air.
