Ben and Winslow began their lives when I was a senior in high school, and they were at first faceless stick figures. This was because I was challenged, every day, to fill a sheet of paper, front and back, with a funny comic strip. And I had five minutes to do it.

After the novelty of "speed cartooning" wore off, I started drawing comics for the hell of it. I fleshed the characters out a little bit so that "Guy on the Left" (as Ben was called) and "Guy on the Right" (as Winslow was called) could display more emotion.

This is the first part of one of those comics from right after Ben and Winslow's stick figure stage. The general idea behind these cartoons was that Ben retained continuity from panel to panel, while Winslow said/did something completely random every time he got to speak. As you can see, the "Playing Fireman" idea [link] was here in it's earliest stage. It only took me five years to redraw it.

I still laugh when I read "Que Habla My Ass!" Not that it makes sense.
