Description It’s easy to get jealous when everyone around you is successful.

It’s even easier to get jealous when “everyone” includes a dog.

On a personal note, I really do think George is a stupid name for a dog. In my pet-naming rulebook, pets aren’t allowed to have people names unless they’re named after someone famous or after a character in a book. Kate’s dog isn’t named after any George in particular. Rulebreaker.

Once I met a dachshund named Walter. It worked pretty well, actually.

I agree with the sentiment. Pet naming is fun, why give them a people name?
Our dog is named April. It was a concession - we got her in April - because there were 7 people who wouldn't agree on a name. When I was told, I asked "that name for a dog?" I call her puppy or bubby or apie ...
Our rabbit's name is Bobby. That was my mum. I call him Fluffball (our old rabbit was unnamed (for complicated reasons), and I called him Mr. Fluffybunnykins)

When seven people can't decide, that means it's time for gladiatorial combat.

That would have been my idea, but the decision was made without me

And I felt okay, because I had more than a little sway in naming our cat years ago. He was Oliver ... but he was named after the movie cat of the same name, so that's kinda okay.

I agree with that logic. Pets should be named something interesting. Take my brother's old pet Guinea Pig for example. Nobody could deny that 'The Fluffy People' is an awesome name for a pet.

Pets are the perfect opportunity to name something crazy. The sort of name you wouldn't give a child.

I had a dog named George, he was named because of that episode of Bugs Bunny in which a hair beast thing picked up and violently squeezed Bugs whilst saying "I'll hug 'im and squeeze 'im an' call 'im George".

I think that would comply with your rules, no?

My rule of thumb for naming pets: You name your pet the name you would like your children to have, but your spouse/partner/donor won't let you name them.

AK-Is-Harmless In reply to OlgyRodz13 [2011-10-10 17:32:21 +0000 UTC]

That means I'll have to name my next pet "Thorin Oakenshield." Because I think "Thorin Oakenshield Kaye" is a bitchin' name.

In my pet-naming rulebook, pets aren’t allowed to have people names unless they’re named after someone famous or after a character in a book.

I AGREE! When I first wanted my puppy (and thought it would be a boy) I wanted to name it Sir William of Normandy because I thought it would be hilariously absurd. But I always pick from fictional characters/famous (dead) people. Her name is Harley Quinn now, so yeah.

I had a laugh at this. Sometimes when you overhear people talking about their pets (and I myself am guilty) it sounds as if they're actually talking about other people. x]

My cat's name is Mina, but only because that was the name she had at the animal shelter, and I didn't want to confuse the hell out of her. But she's a black cat, so I like to think she's named after Mina Harker in Dracula.

Sometimes it's really funny to give a pet a human name. My friend has a dog named Sarah--he once gave her a facebook page. The majority of my friends confirmed her as a friend--and thought she was his sister. He doesn't have a sister.

Love the punchline to this one.

Pet names should be creative and personal.

However, we had a goldfish once called paddyjoe.
Which I have to admit was funnily Irish.
