Description Hoooooooraaaaaaaay, I finally finished this off! It's been sitting in my binder for a while, so very star-less... D:

So, a fanart I did of Rosalina and the Lumas of Super Mario Galaxy! 8D I FRIGGIN' LOVE LUMAS, DID YA'LL KNOW THAT? NO? WELL NOW YOU DO. YES? WELL I JUST THOUGHT I'D REMIND YOU. "LUUUUUUUUUUUUMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!!"

And oh look! No lines! Aki has ventured outside her box! Through a happy accident I discovered that I could fashion myself a lightbox, so now I can doodle the sketches in my sketchbook and then traced over it with my lightbox, and color a cleaner, nicer, line-less copy. 8D LOOOOOOVE.

I also wanted to try to get this to look more....storybook-y. :3 Ya know, since I wanna be an illustrator and all. >w< And also because I LOVE those adorable scenes were Rosie reads to Mario and the Lumas....so cute. <3

The concept here is Rosalina and the Lumas looking down on the Mushroom Kingdom from their space station. Perhaps even before the start of Super Mario Galaxy? Where the adventures of Mario and Luigi going off to save the Princess Peach from the evil clutches of Bowser are just a story to them... Until it hits closer to home! 8D

Why is Bowser's Castle so close to Peach's Castle? Mostly cause I wanted to fit them both in there, but I was going with the look of most of the planets in the game itself... Doesn't make sense at all, but hey, it's a video game.

Um....LUMAS! I love 'em! Don't you? 8D

Critique please! Not gonna get better unless I get it! 8D

so that's what lumas are! I am enlightened!
The lineless approach here makes everything seem more "pearly" or 3D, like the graphics of the game, especially on her hair.
I like the concept behind it of the coexistance of supermariogalaxy's world during the "main" supermario plot. I guess whether something is truth or story is just how much distance there is between it and yourself.
Hm.. as for critiques, I don't see anything else that others have already mentioned so...
keep it up!

Wow, what a lovely pic! The coloring is so smooth and indeed very "storybook-y".

Critique? Hmm... the only thing I can see is the placement of Rosalina's facial features - the location of her mouth is fine, but if her eye and nose were to be moved to the right a little, and her nose dropped down slightly, she'd look less cyclops-ish.

Nonetheless, it's still a beautiful piece worthy of a . Fantastic job!

Hmmm okay. Critiqueeee...

I think the face is a little off with the perspective. I think the hair on the upper left looks too flat for the rest of the hair.

Hmmm, also the background is all one color, you can give it more depth by adding different colors besides black.

Also, it looks like the legs are too short how you drew them. Like...the feet are barely sticking out.Okay let me try to explain better...hm. The dress lacks folds in the cloth so it's difficult to discern where the legs are underneath. But how you colored the cloth gives off the impression her legs are short. If we saw more of the lower leg coming out from beneath the dress that could be corrected OR give the cloth folds to see how the legs go underneath.

I hope that helps. ^_^ I really like the concept of the drawing, it looks really sweet. And all the lumas are cute. Good job. :3

You mean the top part of her bang that goes over her eye? Yeah, I can see what you mean there. If it was digital I could go back and fix it. :/

But...but I did. D: I guess I didn't do it well enough if you can't tell. The "Black" was actually made by coloring a very dark brown over a navy blue. I had my high school art teacher drill me numerous times over how flat black looks, so I try to avoid it when possible. If you look close enough you CAN see variations in the color... But I suppose it still wasn't enough. D:

Yeah...I...struggled with the legs. ...I really need to go and get my sketches critiqued before I color. D:

Thanks for the crit!! 8D

This is really beautiful! I love the storybook style, especially considering how appropriate it is, and it looks great when combined with the way Rosalina is drawn, which looks a bit like a less mainstream manga's splash page (I think the hair is a large part of that- it's really stylish). The background is really pretty, too- it must have taken such patience to do all the spot stars!

Thankies! Actually the spot stars were done with watered-down acrylic paint and a toothbrush. (Ever run your fingers of the bristles of your toothbrush and feel the water droplets go everywhere? It's great for stars. 8D )

AkiAmeko In reply to xdragonfaire [2009-12-16 20:06:05 +0000 UTC]

To make a lightbox, you will need:
Showbox (or other box about the same size. Needs to be sturdy cardboard)
Glass or Plexi-glass (at least as big as the bottom of the show box. I use glass from a picture frame.)
Night light
Extension cord

Cut the bottom of the box so that only about an inch of width is left all the way around the edge. Place glass or plexi-glass on top of hole. Plug in night-light to extension cord and place below the box. Voila! You now have a lightbox.

I'd also suggest paper-clipping your original lines and the new piece of paper together when tracing to keep them in place. Also, trace with a pencil first so you can fix any mistakes, and then go over it with a light value marker. (Preferably one that will be reoccurring in your composition.)

Yeah, I figured that out one time when my sis suddenly made a HUGE OOPSIE on one of her pieces. She was getting really upset so I did SUPER-SPECIAL-AWESOME-BIG-SISTER-QUICK-THINKING and made it for her in a few minutes. 8D And then I realized the USEFULNESS of my creation... >w<

Really cute! However, there is something about the spacing and location of the eye and nose that makes me think she is a cyclops.
