Description The Atari 800 XL-tan is an odd entity, only barely considered a console-tan by most standards. While the Atari 2600-tan is very well-known as one of the earliest second-generation girls, the 800 XL and her family of numbered sisters were designed primarily to be household servants. The 800 XL includes a magnetic resonance unit, which allows her to interact with the brainwaves of her master, but has a very low number of simple scenarios. Instead, most of her scenarios have to be generated by the owner themselves, in a long and difficult to learn process of programming that was repeated in many other "secondary console-tans". She was not the most powerful of her group of console-tans, but because of her middle of the road abilities and price tag, she is one of the better known and more loved of them. Because of her programmable tendencies, her personality tends to shape more dramatically than other console-tans, and her built-in personality is rather plain, though that usually changes rather quickly. It's not likely you'll see her in the hands of anyone other than a collector nowadays, and her difficult repairs make it even less likely.

Recently got into the Atari 8 bit computer series. I've got some favourite games. And I'm looking through your console tans gallery and this is all great and I love the idea of having them in comics.

Hold the phone Atari 2600 was 4 bit
Atari 1200 was a pong console
So WTF would the Atari 800 be? A single pixel?

Atari 2600 was 8-bit.  The X00 series were more personal computers.

Ah.. thank you
But the 26K was 8? It looks a little primitive to be 8

The bit count has little to do with performance.  The atari jaguar is a 64-bit machine that runs like crap, while the PS3 is a 32-bit machine.

She's an 800, not a 2600.

My family owns more than one. One is still running perfectly in our frame shop.

I still miss my Atari 130XE, which had a red, gray, and silver color scheme. The 800XL sold in huge quantities, the 130XE always did everything I ever asked of it.

Ahhh, the venerable Atari 8-bit. Next thing we'll go up to the Atari 520ST, and then the memories will hit hard...

Hopefully the 130XE, not the 65XE (which is basically the 800XL).

It's one with big colorful buttons. I'll try to grab it later.

You may not have the 130XE, but a normal old 800 (not the XL). Wikipedia has the photos of them models.

Heh, are you kidding? We've NEVER needed to repair our Atari 800 XL-tan. She's been a dedicated servant in our store's frameshop for decades and she's NEVER needed repairing. She was built to LAST!

Yeah, but when they DO go, who's going to be able to fix one?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alexwarlorn In reply to MSFHWraith [2013-01-29 02:45:36 +0000 UTC]

No offense intended to her, but she's not exactly a complex machine by today's standards.

And she plays a great game of Donkey Kong.

MSFHWraith In reply to alexwarlorn [2013-01-29 02:49:28 +0000 UTC]

Of course, but that still doesn't mean it's easy to find a mechanic that knows what one is, or a proper power supply or any of the replacement parts it might need.

I just know my family's experience with them, have proven them to be incredibly reliable machines.

Atari is actually still around, although it's trying to get out of it's money-losing EU parents Atari SA (aka Infogrames). It's not building computers anymore, alas...

...but it would be funny if they built a 8-bit 130XE/16-bit ST emulating ARM system. Hmmm....

I don't think THE Atari exists anymore. Now it's just whoever currently owns the label.

The game company exists, having multiple owners over the years. The hardware company is long gone, given up to the PC industry.

Any plans on doing an Amiga one?
Amigas were mostly computers, but there was Amiga CD32 which was a console, so could you include it, please?

Maybe if someone commissions it, though we have a bunch more common ones we'd like to draw first.

Probably so |D
I live in Poland, which happens to be in Europe, and the Amiga compuiters were a big hit here, mostly because we barely got anything else... |D
