Description I've been working on this for ages, but haven't had the time to finish it until tonight This is Cera Hawke, my Dragon Age 2 character, and her love interest, Anders. If you've played DA2, you may be able to guess what event this is supposed to depict

Textures from `cloaks , and whatever would I do without them?

SPOILERS:
Cera's love isn't easily earned, neither is it easily taken away. She felt stunned and betrayed by what he did, and for a moment, thought about just killing him and walking away from the whole thing. But she knew deep down that what he did wasn't selfish - actually, it was a sacrifice. He took responsibility for doing what she never would have done, but what she knew needed to happen. She could never give up on him, and more importantly, she could never give up on the cause of the mages. Even if all of Thedas was plunged into the war and every Circle faced annulment, she would burn the world for freedom. And for him.

For a moment I thought it was a *very* generous version of Aveline.

I have to wonder if she would pursue Anders or chalk it up to one night of serious craziness. If Anders had not started it, then Orsino or Meridith probably would have. I really wonder what Aveline's final take on everything was and how she felt about Hawke afterwards. Anyway, nice work! And glad you opted to follow Anders into revolution as well. Viva le revolution!

Thank you!

Yeah, Aveline is a really interesting character. In my game she fought with them, went with them out of Kirkwall, but then went her own way. I suppose she wanted to stand by her good friends when they really needed it, but didn't want to be associated with their crimes in the long run. Which is fair enough, really, my Hawke almost had the same reaction. Almost

I very much like the softness of this. There's a certain contrast between the softeness of this image and the harshness of their reality. It's fitting.

Love the statement of the picture. Although, to be honest, being a person who enoyed the Grey warden mage in DA I don't think the world is quite beyond redemption yet.

Of course not... Clearly the player has to save the world, or what sort of RPG would it be? Thanks for your comment!

Orumon In reply to AlanaKai [2011-05-17 08:07:54 +0000 UTC]

Hawke can't. He/She (I have female mage Hawke as my primary) is inneffectual compared to the Grey Warden from DA origins.

Of course the Warden was insanely powerful no matter what class he/she was.

AlanaKai In reply to Orumon [2011-05-17 09:42:53 +0000 UTC]

Well, the Warden was supposed to be an anomolously powerful legend But didn't you find DA2 easier than Origins? I certainly did. At least on the PC version (which I play), where for Origins, PC Normal was the same difficulty as Console Easy, etc. I think on DA2 they made it the same, and even on my first playthrough I ended up walking it without even thinking on Normal and would have to turn it up for even a slight challenge. Once you get one of the killer abilities or sets of abilities in DA2, you're pretty much unstoppable.

Orumon In reply to AlanaKai [2011-05-17 20:27:02 +0000 UTC]

Sadly yes. DAII actually had an enemy class that should have been called fodder and none of the enemies used their abilities on anywhere near the level that Origins did. I guess Kirkwall was just lower on the spectrum of ability.

I personally thought it would be interesting to fight a templar army as a mage and was dissapointed to find that they functioned just like everyone else.

Being a console guy I was saddened to find they'd made it more consol-ey (I buy these games for console because my computer cannot support them)

Love your drawing style.

When i say this moment for the first time i was like, WTF !!!!!!!!!!. Anders what that old lady do to you. I killed the prick , Yes i was a mage too, Mister free all mages even blood mages. My hawke after her mothers death started to see why templars were need. Plus caver was one of them

AlanaKai In reply to Sid0608 [2011-05-15 10:30:29 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha. Thanks My Hawke hated the mages who proved the Templars' cases even more than she hated the Templars. Which is why it created such a conflict in her when Anders made such a dramatic move. But then, most mages only make such moves because their hand is forced by the Templars... And those who are just psychopaths like the guy who kills your mother (Quentin, I think), well, there are psychopaths everywhere, not just amongst mages :shrugs:

very good point, Same with my hawke she hated anders with a passion. Anders is only good for two when my hawke, is a rouge or warrior keeping bethany alive, and helping me get my champion armor.

J:

It's a bummer that people who can't afford premium memberships aren't allowed to post in that critique box; critique is as valid coming from someone who pays for dA as it is from someone who uses it for free. Oh well, that's life I suppose.

Anyway, this looks absolutely amazing! I have so much fun looking at how much your art has evolved since your first page of The Ninth Wind, and your technique is at a much more advanced level. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with Dragon Age so I can't give much feedback on the characterisation, but I certainly can give feedback on your technique!

First of all, your features are becoming very realistic and detailed-- I really like the variety of skin tones in the face and chiaroscuro on Anders. I like how your art still maintains the semi-realistic style, it's perfect for the fantasy genres you work with. I also like how much detail you incorporated into the picture, particularly the texture of Cera's hair and chainmail. I'm seriously loving the rim light on Cera's face and neck!

The clouds look great too; the blur of the falling embers gives it a very dynamic feel, and really radiates the tension that the characters are feeling. It looks like there is definitely a story behind this picture!

As advanced as your technique is, I do have a couple of critiques to offer. The anatomy is looking great, and I like the vintage appeal of Cera's facial features. However I would also incorporate more definition of the neck muscles on Anders-- his neck looks awfully smooth for someone who looks like he engages in physical activity. The sternocleidomastoid muscles are almost always visible on people with his body type. As for Cera, a muscular neck might not fit her delicate facial features very well, but I'd still incorporate some more definition in.

As well-detailed as Cera's hair is, it stands out too starkly from her face-- the shadow goes from dark and dramatic on her skin to none at all on the hair. The hair should be shaded along with her face, although it may not show her blonde as well, it makes the shading a lot more consistent and realistic. adding a bit of a rimlight on her hair (along with some possible flyaway strands) would make a nice effect, and it is usually how hair appears when illuminated from the backside.

I'd also incorporate some blue into the rimlight or highlights on top, as it looks like the blue crystal is glowing. It looks odd for the light to only bounce off the smoke, but no cool tones incorporated onto the subjects.

All in all, this is a very well executed piece! While a few minor improvements can be made, the technique is very advanced and you have a good grasp at colours and detail. You're also great at telling a story through your art and conveying characterisation. Awesome work!

Thanks so much for all your amazing feedback! I'm really happy that you can see improvement in my work. That's what it's all about You're right about the necks, I'm really awful at drawing them. I should use more references really :\ And yeah, I see what you mean about her hair, I might fix that if I remember to when I get a moment!

It is annoying that only premium members can give critique. It's not really an important feature though, since as you say, anyone CAN give critique in the comments, it's just a gimmick really

Hee. Oh Anders. I love how his character has developed - I liked him in Awakening, but the storyline he's followed really adds huge new dimensions to his character

alsiony In reply to AlanaKai [2011-05-12 17:52:29 +0000 UTC]

I agree. His character has more dimension than in Awakening and that's make him more interesting to me with Justice and the whole things.
And your art express the feeling in the moment so great. Show how important of the moment it is that will change their life forever. And the wind make it sad in someway like something terrible gonna happen.

heh, mine ended up agreeing with him except on the specific tactic, fewer innocents (liek the chantry would have had a hostel and orphanage) same goal. Elthina knew she was in danger and a target, she stayed.

The nighttime view makes it much more dramatic. Is there a bit of a Gibson girl in how you drew her face? Anders' face looks a bit redder than he appeared in my game. love it though!

AlanaKai In reply to anesor [2011-05-12 16:51:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I wasn't really thinking Gibson Girl, but I see what you mean. I just tried to make her look like she does in game I gave Anders a little red to his face because I thought that this is a high-emotion moment, and he might be a little flushed

This is beautiful. My rogue!Hawke wanted to punch Anders until he didn't look like Anders anymore, but I want to make an apostate!Hawke who'd agree with him.

I truly envy your artistic talent, though.

Keep drawing.

AlanaKai In reply to BloodyHighClaw [2011-05-12 09:04:40 +0000 UTC]

I liked it a lot as a roleplaying opportunity. Cera Hawke had always seen herself as having two aspects - the quiet family girl that she was in Lothering who would never wilfully hurt another person, and the fierce champion of the apostate cause and political revolutionary that she'd become since coming to Kirkwall. But when this happened (and I really didn't see it coming!), she suddenly had to choose between the girl who would have comdemned what he'd done as unforgivable extremism, and the woman who would have called it what needed to be done. However my characters might feel towards the others as people, I think it was a great choice in terms of writing and plot direction
