[Backstory]:
Bugle was born in an acclaimed Giant Schnauzer breeding facility. The youngest of a litter of three, he was named "Bugle" due to his noisy nature when he felt he was being ignored. True to his breeding, he was never able to sit still for long without some kind of given task. His mother claimed he had a battery that just wouldn't quit, no matter how tired everyone else around him was. It was this inherent eagerness that got him chosen for training to become a dual purpose patrol/bomb sniffing dog for the military when he became a year old. That and both of his parents had been successful military dogs as well. It grieved him some what to be taken away from his family, but he knew he was ready for bigger, better, more exciting things than his current life could offer. The training was difficult, but the handler he'd been assigned was patient with him and molded him into an exceptional member of the K-9 force. When his training was complete, he began his career with the military, enjoying every minute of his job. He and his human partner were a great team, and it was claimed that there was no bomb or criminal they couldn't catch. Bugle took great pride in this kind of praise, believing the words for himself. Needless to say, he became a bit big headed. Unfortunately, a day came that would shatter everything he had come to know when his growing lax cost him dearly. During a routine job, a bomb went off unexpectedly, catching Bugle and his partner in the blast. He was injured to the point where he was forced to retire when he was only three years old. His entire left side was embedded with all manner of debris, back leg was broken, and the sound of the blast itself caused him to lose all hearing in his left ear. However, his partner wasn't so lucky. Having been the one to trip the bomb, he was killed in the blast. Bugle was devastated and considered himself responsible for his partners death. If he had been more cautious, more aware of his surroundings, he might have detected the bomb sooner. When he learned he was to be put up for adoption elsewhere instead of returning to the field, he went through a bout of depression. He lost all interest in anything and everything as he figured nothing could be as fulfilling as the life style he'd lost.

He was proven wrong when an old Native American woman adopted him when he received a clean bill of health, taking him to her small home in the country. She had her eye on him for a while and had done her research on the breed in order to provide the best environment possible for a dog that was emotionally traumatized. She entered him in cart pulling competitions (which he found he enjoyed immensely), took him out to the woods where she would collect her natural healing herbs and spices for the small medicine shop she ran (from this he learned the scents and uses of various herbs), and had him herd her many rowdy grand children. He was happy with the life he was leading now. He felt loved and he loved in return, almost forgetting about the accident only a year before.

It didn't occur to him that anything was wrong when the old Indian woman woke him early one morning, directing him to jump in the back of her rusty, old pick up. It wasn't uncommon for her to take him into town...but the amount of supplies, bedding, and medicines in the truck bed confused him. What did she need all this for if they were just going up the road? When the woman started down the dusty, country street, Bugle felt a flicker of concern as they drove right passed the small town and continued to a high way. Every few hours they would stop for food and short breaks before continuing, each stop leaving the Schnauzer with a rising feeling of dread. Were they running from something? As confused as he was, the he trusted his owner. She'd never given him any reason to doubt. A few days into their journey brought them to what looked to be a deserted hotel. At this point, the truck died, unable to go any more due to the stress of the journey and the vehicle's overall antiquity. The woman seemed distressed as she tried again and again to start the engine, but it was to avail. With a frustrated sound, she smacked the wheel forcefully and accidentally sounded the horn. This not only awoke Bugle from a nap, but alerted near by Roamers that began to converge on the truck, grabbing at anything they could reach. Bugle, not sure what they were, snarled loudly as they approached, biting off any fingers that tried to reach into the bed of the truck and take his master's supplies. His nose was overwhelmed with the scent of decaying flesh, but the smell that worried him the most was the fear rolling off the woman. Turning his head towards her, time seemed to slow as the driver's side window was broken and the Indian woman promptly mauled and killed before his eyes. Realizing there was nothing he could do now that his master was dead, he fled the scene.

He spent that year wandering and evading Roamers, coming close to starving but gaining valuable skills in the process. At one point, he wandered into an old city, hoping to find some food and a place to hunker down for the night. Instead, he found a pack of dogs in a similar situation as his own. Common sense told him that it would be better to try to get accepted by the members here rather than continue to scavenge on his own. So he began to show his worth to the other dogs hoping that he could regain a sense of normality and structure among his own kind.

[Personality]

Loyal/Dependable:
- One of the most dependable dogs one could meet, he'll do nothing to betray any trust that has been invested in him. He prides himself in his ability to get things done, regardless of what he has to go through to do so.

Intelligent:
-Due to his training and experience, Bugle is good at thinking on his paws as well as coming up with well thought out strategies. He's also not afraid to take calculated risks, but will be the only one taking said risks. He's not willing to put any other pack members in danger.

Outgoing/Playful:
-Despite all he's gone through, he's very loud and very friendly and loves any chance to make new lasting relationships. Very talkative, so if you like hearing crazy stories but don't like to say much, he doesn't mind. He'll talk ears off if you let him. And he's a pretty good story teller. His laugh can be pretty contagious as well. All work and no play makes for a really dull dog.

Charming/Polite:
-Always ready with a compliment, he's never rude. Its not that he's a suck up, he just believes in complimenting what he finds appealing. And who doesn't like their ego stroked? The closest thing to rude for him is his sarcasm, and that's only when he's agitated.

Competitive:
-Loves a good competition, whether it be a competition of wits or strength. With speed, he'll just throw in the towel, he knows he's no Speedy Gonzales.

Self Doubt:
- Even with his happy, go-lucky attitude, he's often plagued by feelings of inadequacy due to his passed. He wonders why he didn't smell the bomb that cost him half his hearing and his beloved handler, and why he couldn't better protect his second owner from a gruesome death. This self doubt is never really apparent as long as he is active and doing something that doesn't really require him to sit and think. Its most obvious during his fitful periods of interrupted sleep.

One Track Minded:
- Once given a job, nothing else matters until the job is done, this is both a good and bad thing. The good thing is, the job will get done, the bad thing is any other jobs he was supposed to complete will fall on the back burner. Multi-tasking and Bugle don't go well together.

- Cannot hear at all out of left ear due to explosion, so tends to turn his head in order to hear better

-Still some shrapnel in his skin, and back leg tends to bother him on rainy days

-Doesn't like sleeping in, hates to waste any sort of time

-Snorts like a pig when he laughs hard enough
