Description A portfolio illustration I completed as part of Giuseppe Castellano's excellent Illustration Department Three Week Illustration Workshop.

I have written a long blog post about the whole experience, with an in-depth discussion of the process of creating this illustration, from thumbnail to finished artwork. Read it at alene-art.blogspot.com.au/2015…
You can also find work-in-progress snapshots on my Instagram or Twitter accounts.

Size: 8" x 10"
Time Taken: Between 25 and 30 hours all together
References: Pose reference my own, and I looked a lot of images found via google image search, just to check what donkeys and drystone walls look like. No direct references.
Media: FW Artists Acrylic Ink, Winsor & Newton watercolours and Prismacolor pencils on Moleskine watercolour paper.

Enjoy!

...its the classic illustration from the late 19th and early 20th century, when I was young used to grab the illustration nbooks at the library. While i'll never get to the point of doing something like this it still inspires me to try

Typical donkey not wanting to go where you want to go.  It looks terrified, while she's totally oblivious.  The crow seems to be telling it to suck it up and deal.

A beautiful illustration.

Good, that is definitely the mood I was going for with the donkey.
I'm glad you like it, thank you!

This looks great! I was wondering how this workshop went for someone - been thinking about trying it out since I found out a few weeks ago! Loved seeing your process on your blog too.

Thank you so much!
It was great to get some professional feedback on my portfolio and the way I was creating illustrations. Sitting at your desk alternatively working and getting knocked back for other work, it's tempting to a) lose hope and b) not have the faintest idea why, so some feedback on which of my illustrations worked and which ones weren't so good was, I feel, very helpful, and also provided me with a boost to update my portfolio again and head back into the fray.

I hear ya! Illustrating is the loneliest of jobs I feel too sometimes!  Unless you're lucky enough to work on a team, it seems like you live in a bubble most of the time. Glad to know this really helped ya. Keep up the good work! Looking forward to seeing more of it!

It is indeed. I quite like to work on my own, but you can definitely have too much of that - you need the outside influences and opinions, and the conversation, in order to get better (and stay sane )

Very nice! It would make for a lovely book cover I especially love the soft color palette

Thank you so much! I was specifically instructed to mute my palette for this piece, so I'm glad to know I managed to do that well and it all works!

Yes, I read your blog entry  Meant to comment, but I got distracted, I guess? Anyway, this workshop sounds like quite an opportunity, and it seems you've made the most of it

It's easy to get distracted. I'm always thinking about so many things at once (perils of life as a freelancer ) that sometimes commenting falls by the wayside.
Yes, the workshop was a great experience. It's good to get another opinion on a portfolio, see what works and what doesn't, and generally get a boost to keep getting better and better - plus I got some info on the business side that I didn't know before.

I like putting detail into my illustrations... sometimes I think I get a bit carried away though.

My pleasure ^^
I can relate The line between just perfect and overworked can be so blurry (at least until a week after you finished the painting, when you ask yourself what was I thinking ? lol)

Very true. I always like, if possible, to leave at least a day where I can step away from a piece before I submit it to my clients. Not always possible, but I feel better if I can manage it.

Yes it's always a good idea to do that ^^. And that's where working digitally has the advantage - flipping the canvas horizontally helps me tremendously. I wish I could do that with my watercolours .

I hold paintings up to the mirror.

Actually that's a great idea !. So far I tried photographing my wips : looking through the camera lenses sometimes helps.

You can also scan them in and flip them in Photoshop, of course - but often that is too much of an effort when I just want to quickly check that nothing looks weird.

Yes not to mention if you have to evaluate it quickly: wet watercolours don't wait for anyone

What a beautiful painting!  It looks like a picture from a fairy tale about an adventurous girl and her animal companions!  Beautiful colors, textures and details!
