Yes that's what they sometimes mean with "matte painting". Took me a while to find out xD and i'm still not sure...

Interesting concept.

In my minds head I see the comparison between the Media and the Truth of things. Gives me the impression of using spray paint to cover a massive scratch on the side of a car, or something similar.

they're supposed to be moving 3D backgrounds with various interconnecting layers, that were never implemented.

I kinda agree with him though, the screens that appears to radiate light doesn't really.. well.. radiate much light.
This 3D Background thing, are you going to upload that btw? Sounds like a cool idea.
