Ooooo, nice!

Must be an icky day outside since you're stuck with taking photographs in your kitchen. You have a true knack with inanimate object still life.

Thanks! This was actually from the classroom pics that I took. Took this on a whim.

Lovely day here today with sun and warmth!

Really? A lovely day out is it? Well then, hie thee hence and ply thy trade, wench!

Ooh. "Trade" and "Wench" in the same sentence indicates a field into which I would rather not venture!

!

Methinks I do partake too much of Shakespeare.

Just don't go all Shylock on us.

Not a problem, I'm not Jewish.

Hah! See, I *do* read Shakespeare.

Just testing. Nah, I knew you did. I actually found myself with a lot of sympathy for Shylock.

He was treated rather badly and for no good reason IMHO. I suppose it made good drama...

Oh, and the atmosphere and attitudes of Elizabethan England would have made him a figure of fun for general society. I'm still not sure, however, if Shakespeare was parodying the stereotype of a Jew or if he was actually humanizing the stereotype and showing a more sympathetic side...

Given the nature of Shakespeare's audience, admission to the Globe cost as little as a ha'enny for the gallery - a sum which even the poorest and least educated could well afford for an evening's entertainment, and his use of euphemism and contemporaneous slang in nearly all of his plays, I would think parody would be the thing. Jews were not held in high regard and I doubt that an attempt to humanize or portray a Jew as a sympathetic character would have gone over well.

True enough. Although Shakespeare was known to make "inside" jokes that only the educated would have understood, I don't believe that he went so far as to defy a prevailing sentiment. One never knows, however...

Also true, which proves that he had some connection with or was a member of the gentry but also that he had, in the vernacular, "street cred".
Nor do I believe that he would have gone against any commonly held belief, it would cut into his take. I say this advisedly since I know of no study having been done to analyze the Globe's books to determine where and to whom the monies were distributed nor even if any books exist to be examined.
I truely wonder if the mystery of who he was will ever be solved.
