Description I've had this itch to draw some clouds with the sun from behind for weeks now.
I'm seeing really beautiful sunrises like this lately, and since I live by the ocean, sights like this are common (save for the dragon unfortunately)

Simple picture, not perfect but I like it

Alright

This one started out as some practice fun, so it started sloppy and I eventually worked it and worked it. Basically, what I did was find a photograph of some couds I liked a lot.
1. I made a layer in photoshop that was just sky, so just blue.
2. I made another layer on top, which was going to be the clouds in the sky. I started by painting the entire cloud one solid pink color with a brush.
3. With the magic wand tool i selected the entire cloud.
4. With the cloud selected, and using the airbrush, I started giving it some shape. I used different colors, like purples, to make the darker areas, and more yellow colors to make the lights.
5. Once I made the cloud look 3D I chose to make the sunlight come from one side of it. So I went back to layer 1, used the airbrush tool with a nearly white yellow and made the light effect.
6. I went back to the cloud, and made it much lighter around the sun area.
7. The I did the same on the reflected water, except softer because water doesnΒ΄t reflect exactly.
8. And lastly, I drew the little dragon on a third layer.

I really only use the paintbrush and the airbrush. And a lot of going over parts again and again to make more contrast. I hope that helps!

Oh it's the simplicity of this that kills me... What a beautiful vista. Being able to just go on a simple desire like that is priceless. Great work! It really inspires me to try something simple for once.

Thank you!

It's one, if not the only, photoshop image that I tried to do freehand without a drawing or anything, and it's had a lot of success. I never do that but it turned out beautiful. I suggest you try the same, and see what you come up with without killing yourself with details and worrying about what it will look like at the end. Add stuff simply because you're having fun

oh man... *holds back* I'll have to wait till after my exam this week.... but that's just making me giggle because you know... I've never done that. I mean, seriously. That sounds ridiculous, right? I mean, I started art because I enjoyed it, and I've never just done a 'for the fun of it' thing. I mean, even my scraps were contrived and all... How silly am I? I really gotta keep my standards straight and have fun with what little time I have here.

Darn. I'm just going to be laughing this off for a week. You give so much more than art when you do stuff like this, you know?

Yes, it's important to have fun with drawing. Otherwise, we're just killing our gift by getting bored of it. But I also do that and forget that I am the person who decides what I draw after all, not just friends who expect me to draw dragon after dragon or something. So yea just go and have some fun!

Aye aye, cap'n. And same to you! I need to make a deviation just to remind myself of the fact.

This is, like, amazing! The colors are gorgeous, and I love the pastel-like look to the image. The way the sun comes over the clouds is excellently done, and I'm loving that dragon! Not to mention the whole vibe the picture gives off...It has a durreal, dreamlike quality that makes it seem...half-real. Like it's really there, and not just a picture. Ugh, I'm not making any sense. Well, anyway, I love this picture, and I'm definitely adding it to my favorites!

Regards,
Seiren
