Description Cadillac Ranch
December 5th, 2009; 9:26 AM

I was driving through Amarillo, Texas, on the homeward bound portion of my 6000 mile cross country trip, when out of the corner of my eye I saw what looked like a line of cars buried in a field. It immediately flashed through my mind what it was... I had no idea I was near Cadillac Ranch. I'd always wanted to see it so I took the next exit and headed back down old Route 66 to this artistic icon.... well... junk to some, art to others.

It was very cold with a slight breeze, but I didn't care. I spent nearly an hour roaming around taking shots and looking for a spray can with something left in it. You see, Graffiti is encouraged here. One time all the cars were painted pink for breast cancer awareness. All the spray cans were used up (when they transplanted the cars to the new area they transplanted some of the spray cans too.) but someone did leave behind a big Sharpie Marker... Yes. I left my mark behind with the knowledge it would more than likely be covered within a week or so, as all the others are. That's part of the art.

If you're unfamiliar with the history of this place, look it up.

Back in 1978, during our great "Lewis and Clark" expedition and before they were moved, they had no graffiti. Β But that was before graffiti was the craze. Β I suppose the spray paint may make them last a bit longer. Β  Β I want to say there were more Caddies before the move too.

I've never known them without graffiti... the artist encourages it, actually. In fact, when they moved the site to it's present location, he brought along all the spray cans and scattered them around as part of the piece. He's painted over the cars many times, once painting them all pink for breast cancer awareness.Β

Yep...Β in 1997 the installation was quietly moved by a local contractor two miles (three kilometers) to the west, to a cow pasture along Interstate 40, in order to place it farther from the limits of the growing city.

I actually live close to Amarillo Texas and have relatives who live closer. I'd heard about this view, but I've never seen it, NOW I really want to.

It really is a cool place. Be sure to take a spray can or a big Sharpie and leave your mark.

Cool shot. Now if only we could keep the immature juveniles away from it. (Referencing the "D!*K" on the foreground car.)

The paint is fairly thick for sure. I heard they sandblasted them sometime back, but I've never been able to verify that.

A lot of the cars have been replaced so that wouldn't surprise me.
