Description This is an image I've been working on for the past months. I wanted to create an image where a lake is breaking up as a mirror. I wanted to make the effect look as realistic as possible so I decided to buy 17 square meters of mirrors last summer and brought out the mirrors, a boat and the model to a stone-pit.

Behind the scenes video of how it was made:Β youtu.be/OpMtcze2A3Q?list=PLv_…

EDIT: THANKS FOR THE DD!!! <3

This is really a fantastic piece! I was browsing the "critiqueable" section and when I saw the thumbnail, I just had to know how this was done. I assumed it would be a digital painting or something, which would have been impressive enough, but actually going through the effort to get this effect in the real world and blending it together with landscape photography? Seems like you really went the extra mile. However this is supposed to be a critique and not just praise, soo.. if I could change anything about this, I'd maybe remove the ripped paper texture in the sky. I'm sure it has some meaning for the piece and you intended something with it, but as a person just casually viewing this, it doesn't seem particularly necessary. Without the ripped sky the breaking effect would sort of fade into the haze of the background, maybe enhancing the sort of atmospheric distance effect and adding more dimension and a dreamlike quality. But then, it's not like the rip in the sky really takes much away either, so it may make more sense with the personal symbolism this has for you. Overall this is quite wonderfully surreal with just enough of the prosaic to make it particularly intriguing.

Thank you for your feedback, I thought about the crack in the back a lot and it had a few make-overs, the idea is that the crack is (possibly) caused by the person in the boat, continuing beyond just the lake but affecting the whole world. But you have a good point. Anyway, if you're interested in how it was made I just put up a bts video of it:Β youtu.be/OpMtcze2A3Q?list=PLv_…

Looks like that man should have been more careful - now he has broken the lake and is stranded in the middle. Oops.
The behind the scenes video is interesting, too, and I like the way all these elements come together.Β

Great work, especially the video

But it turns me to the question,
If you Β had so, so much to "manipulate", why do you ever used real mirror?
And destroy this?
Would not it have been easier to manipulate all digital?
You should fuel and energy savings, travel time, glass, money.
The environment is protected against glass splinters and exhaust gases etc. etc.:Β Β

the mirrors were not just broken apart, they were cut by a professional glasser in the shapes I wanted and required. The mirrors would have been thrown out otherwise. Also, when you just see it on the web like this you can't really tell if it would have been fake or real mirrors but when I make big prints and you look closely you can tell the difference between the real mirrors and fake photoshoped. I always try to capture as much as possible in camera, that always makes it look more realistic. The remaining mirrors were properly disposed after the shot.

This is flawless in technically execution. After many years of sticking to traditional art, I finally decided I had better go ahead and learn Photoshop as well. I have a lot to learn and a long ways to go before I'm anywhere near skillful enough to create something like this. I've probably mentioned this before, but you're the most talented Photoshop artist I've seen here on dA.
