Description Amphicoelias altus here is a diplodocid sauropod from the Late Jurassic (150 million years ago) Morrison Formation of Colorado, United States. Named in 1878, its name means “high both hollow”, referring to its large size and the shape of its vertebrae, which are hollow on both sides.

Like all diplodocids, Amphicoelias had a long neck and long, whip-like tail. The animal is estimated as being 18 meters (~59 feet) long, average for diplodocids, but its name was more famously associated with an even larger animal. That is, however, a story for another time.
