dont know if you needed to mention this but i had to specify that i wanted the sphere to receive the caustics. otherwise you get an error. just incase anyone has the same problem.

I've followed this step by step
I takes 25 minutes to get to a photon emission of 0.5% ? Any pointers?

25 minutes to render?
What are your computer specs?

Not to render, to emit 0.5% of the photons required
I have a dual core 3ghz p4, 8gb DDR2 667MHZ ram, dual 6800gt's. Perhaps I've done something wrong but I can't find what it is

Great Tutorial! The only thing is, I couldnt find the Refraction settings (the ones you said to set to 80). And then 3ds Max froze up, lol. Anyway, thanks, this helped!

hey.. very awsome tutorial. One problem I had was the render looked very very grainey and alised. Is there an antialias option for mental ray that I cant find?

I think its under the tab where you can adjust sampling.

Ahh thanks.. wow these settings can adversly affect render time and quality.. newhoo thanks again this is a huge help

Did you look in the render dialog?

isnt it supposed to be in the light's settings?

Well I thought i'd do a render of it myself, with caustic and GI multiplier set to 1
The Picture in my scrapbook
The use of so many photons isn't necessary, its a waste of processing power.
Although I have to say that the material is quite nice. A proper mental ray material is a bit nicer tho ^^.

hey, do you really mean to set up the global multipliers with x50000 for caustic photons, and x10000 for global illum photons, because thats an awfully large amount, considering that the standard amounts are 10000 photons each. Hey I hold realistic simulations in high respects, but 500000000 caustic and 100000000 GI photons is a little overkill, realistic renders can be achieved with less than 25000 caustic photons per light. How long did it take you to render that image?

not too long. 3 minutes I think

uhm so do you really mean to set the global multiplier to that or not, that kinda was my question, the render time was secondary
