Description Ok here is my latest tutorial. Some of the settings may be a little wierd so be sure to mess around and try out your own styles. Remember lighting makes a BIG difference. Also when you adjust the caustic energy you may want to switch to manual.

The Matlib demo's are here. [link]

Remember to +fav guys. If noone show sthey care about these tutorials which take MY time to write then I wont make em anymore. Also dont be afraid to +watch I like watchers.

dont know if you needed to mention this but i had to specify that i wanted the sphere to receive the caustics. otherwise you get an error. just incase anyone has the same problem.

I've followed this step by step

I takes 25 minutes to get to a photon emission of 0.5% ? Any pointers?

25 minutes to render?

What are your computer specs?

denizengt In reply to Alpha-Leader [2007-01-20 01:18:43 +0000 UTC]

Not to render, to emit 0.5% of the photons required

I have a dual core 3ghz p4, 8gb DDR2 667MHZ ram, dual 6800gt's. Perhaps I've done something wrong but I can't find what it is

Hmm... This tutorial is so old It is hard to remember what I was doing when I made it
Maybe you are getting some wierd kind of bug, it might be best to try adjusting some of the settings to see if you can get it working.

BTW Nice rig.
That is like my rig except I dont have that much ram

Yeah, I don't need that much hehehe, I got it on special.

Hmm, there must be some issue with the max install or the scene, because even on like 20 photons there's the same issues. I'll look into it, thanks

Great Tutorial! The only thing is, I couldnt find the Refraction settings (the ones you said to set to 80). And then 3ds Max froze up, lol. Anyway, thanks, this helped!

Thanks
Refraction settings are on the material.

great tut, i think DA is lacking in decent 3ds tutorials, maybe its time i did my own...
anyway, i'd been searching google for hours and hours looking for something with caustics or just highly realistic refractions/reflections, and i never thought to look here.
your caustic settings were very very different to what the net was telling me...i shall have to experiment

hey.. very awsome tutorial. One problem I had was the render looked very very grainey and alised. Is there an antialias option for mental ray that I cant find?

Alpha-Leader In reply to nuxeon [2006-05-11 05:28:13 +0000 UTC]

I think its under the tab where you can adjust sampling.

Ahh thanks.. wow these settings can adversly affect render time and quality.. newhoo thanks again this is a huge help

awesome tut, but when i created the MR area light, i didnt find the mental ray indirect illumination stuff. please help!

Did you look in the render dialog?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

faeder In reply to Alpha-Leader [2006-03-21 00:33:19 +0000 UTC]

isnt it supposed to be in the light's settings?

verius [2006-01-27 03:50:50 +0000 UTC]

Well I thought i'd do a render of it myself, with caustic and GI multiplier set to 1

The Picture in my scrapbook

The use of so many photons isn't necessary, its a waste of processing power.

Although I have to say that the material is quite nice. A proper mental ray material is a bit nicer tho ^^.

verius [2006-01-26 11:42:36 +0000 UTC]

hey, do you really mean to set up the global multipliers with x50000 for caustic photons, and x10000 for global illum photons, because thats an awfully large amount, considering that the standard amounts are 10000 photons each. Hey I hold realistic simulations in high respects, but 500000000 caustic and 100000000 GI photons is a little overkill, realistic renders can be achieved with less than 25000 caustic photons per light. How long did it take you to render that image?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alpha-Leader In reply to verius [2006-01-26 16:39:12 +0000 UTC]

not too long. 3 minutes I think

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

verius In reply to Alpha-Leader [2006-01-27 00:41:08 +0000 UTC]

uhm so do you really mean to set the global multiplier to that or not, that kinda was my question, the render time was secondary

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alpha-Leader In reply to verius [2006-01-27 02:16:13 +0000 UTC]

yes set it to what the tut says
