Description

Sugar flyer ( marsupial bat )

Scientific name:

Height: 8 inches

Wingspan: 5 feet

Weight: several ounces

Habitat: rainforests

Native region: Australasia

Evolved from: sugar glider

Lifespan: 12-20 years

  • Sugar flyers are small marsupial mammals that evolved membranous bat like wings similar to their placental counterparts which are bats. Due to convergent evolution, sugar flyers have developed powered flight instead of gliding like their ancestors once did. They've even reduced their tails in order to decrease drag.
  • They live in the forest canopy and live in social groups. Sugar flyers form strong bonds with each other and loneliness can cause an individual to become depressed. They exclusively feed on fruit and act as seed dispersers.
  • Joeys hitch a ride on the mothers back or within her pouch. As the joey becomes older, the joey spends less time in the pouch and more time flying on their own.

Sugar glider->Sugar Flyer. Even when they evolved powered flight, they still retain their sugary diets.
