Edit: Cleaned it up a lot and did some digital magic to make the scales and beak a slightly different colour to make them stand out better from the rest of the body. It looks way better overall now, so thought it was worth showing again /end edit
I'm (somewhat) alive! Mostly been fiddling with personal stuff for the last month, which is why I haven't posted much. In fact this one is personal too, but eff' it, I'll throw it up here!
This one made me particularly happy! Sketching it was hell for personal reasons, but colouring it was incredible. Not to get all philosophical, but while colouring it I realized something that I've been trying to figure out for almost 10 years. It was a real eureka moment and I feel profoundly enlightened! Swag.
Far from the best work I've ever done, but I love it simply because of that.
For those wondering what this critter is anyway, I'm not 100% sure. It's an old design, like 12-13 years old. I've changed my mind about their role in my story several times. At the moment they're a type of Reapers who specialize in catching Souls before they reach the after life. The Souls can then be reshaped into new people. It's some kind of reincarnation stuff that's still a little up in the air. They have to be quick about catching those Souls, if the Soul reaches the after life it will be purified and can't be reincarnated. Wow, such solemn, many lore.
Not sure about their colours either. Right now they're boringly gold. Might have fun with fancy unnatural patterns and colourations later.
I used to have problems sketching these guys because the mystical glowing smoke at their paws always just made them look like they had really smelly feet

Ooh, you used colouring pencils for this? It looks fantastic! I love those kinda japanese style clouds too. Interesting lore for these guys. Would it be their jobs also to choose what a soul gets reshaped into? Or perhaps someone else does that.

Ou yes I did! It's been so many years since I've used colouring pencils, it's disgusting. I've done pencil and ink doodles, but actual traditional colouring is like... A thing of 2011, maybe 2012. I kinda thought all my colouring pencils would be dry and useless by now. I'm not sure how the "expiration date" works, but I've heard they actually go "bad" after some years. Sounds odd. ANYWAY! Felt amazing to go back to them, like rediscovering something important, aaaaaay!!! I should be doing so much more of this.
And thank you!! Nah, these guys don't get to reshape anything. Only the highest Gods get to do that, and the Reapers are some of the lowest on the list. Right now I have 12 different ranks of Gods and there's a strict hierarchy dictating who can do what. Well, technically I have 18 ranks but some of them are only demi-God things, so they don't count

Haha, I hear ya, I haven't used colouring pencils since I was a child. I used to love them though, very therapeutic. Maybe the colouring pencils lose their magical properties after so many years, ahh!
Really interesting, I like how you have different ranks of Gods.
You know I've been reading this book that takes an alternate view of Norse mythology where Odin is viewed as a Demiurge (first time I'd come across the term) who created the realm of man just so he could have control over it. And the "real Gods" are the giants that preceded Odin and his gods. And basically the giants and their offspring that are typically considered evil (such as Loki) are actually trying to free everything from being controlled by Odin's will.
I dunno, I've just been on a bit of a mythology/gods binge recently and your stuff has some super cool ideas behind it.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuude I did eeeeverything in colouring pencils as a teen! I have so many unopened packs lying around, including some outrageously expensive ones that I was always too afraid of using 'cause I didn't want to waste them on bad drawings. The thought of them somehow being "bad" now tears me apart. Egg on my face. lol... It's about time I get started on them. They're better spent on bad art than no art, right?
Oh wouw, that sounds like a really interesting take! When I learned about Norse mythology as a kid I always felt kinda bad for Loki and thought that Odin and Thor were kinda jerks, haha... Especially Thor, he seems so arrogant and short tempered in most stories I found with him. Would like to see a version where Odin is the baddie.

Haha, I 100% had fancy colouring pencils that I never used either because they were TOO GOOD. Seems really silly now though, they're probably still sitting in my parent's house somewhere unused.
Yeah there's that heartbreaking punishment they do to Loki where they tie him up so he has to tip toe to support himself and there's a snake dripping poison onto his face. And Loki's wife Sigyn holds a bowl up above his head to capture and protect him from the poison. She does this for an extremely long time despite it exhausting her. I think that dedication to the one she loves is amazing.

I haven't heard that story, that's so heartbreaking! What a pair of dicks. Also I didn't know Loki was married. Bet lots of single mother Avengers fans are sad to hear that, haha. I should probably study more mythology myself... And watch Avengers.

I dunno, I think Loki has a few different wives throughout the sagas. Maybe it doesn't mean he literally got married, just that they were a couple and had kids. Or Loki was a player. I wouldn't put it past him.
I still haven't seen Avengers Endgame. I literally only watched Infinity War the other day, haha!

Probably a player then. Hell, all gods in all mythologies seem to be players. Especially Greek mythology. Zeus had sooooooooo many bloody spawns, it's like every second god is a son of Zeus, haha!
Haven't watched any of them. The fuzz is making me curious, but I don't know how to get started. Can I just watch Infinity War and Endgame or is there like a whole cinematic clusterfuck of a universe I need to get in on if I wanna enjoy any of it...?

There is actually a whole cinematic clusterfuck to watch to really enjoy it fully. Which honestly puts me off the whole MCU. Because most of the movies just feel the same. And it's clearly just a money making machine at this point. Oooooooooh goooooooooooood. Perhaps I'll just give Infinity War a watch and see how much I understand. If I get it, great, if I don't get it, oh well. Totally feel ya on getting put off by this kind of stuff and a lot of these types of movies feeling samey. The only super hero movie I've ever watched that stands out is probably The Dark Knight. Well, that and a few of the animated DC movies, but that's probably because I'm always more invested in animated stuff in general...

I mean maybe you could just watch the Avengers movies? I think there's only 4... which is still a lot, but that seems much more doable than watching aaaall the Marvel films. And then you'll have more context for what's going on.
Totally agree with you on The Dark Knight, that has to be one of my favourite super hero movies. Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker is just unbeatable in that film.

Sounds like a good idea, 4 isn't too bad, especially not next to 22. I don't know much about Marvel at all, I think the only thing I've watched is X-men Evolution and random episodes from various Spiderman shows... So this'll be fresh if nothing else.

I've seen a fair amount of Marvel stuff. I wouldn't consider myself a big fan though. It's all pretty enjoyable and cool. But I guess I'm just more interested in fantasy stuff. And also cartoons, haha!

Yeah man! He could have been THE guy to go to for villain performances. Some people say it sucks to get type-casted to always play one specific type of character, but hey, if you're the best of the best and enjoy doing it, right???

I love the colors! Really nice use of shade and texture--I have no idea how you managed to do the texture in this. Working the warm colors rather than cool ones for shadows is difficult indeed.
