The downside of hyper realism, I suppose. Thanks for posting, it was interesting to see your process.

Honestly I was slightly skeptic at first glance but I knew you wouldn't be dishonest about this (and I can JUST tell its a painting ) BTW how do you add that texture to his face?? By hand or is it a brush??

I love seeing how youdo it... I wish I could do stuff like that, but my sketching sucks... My doodles are lame and I am incapable of blending colors... So all that's left for me is gazing longingly at other peoples work....

Would you ever consider doing a video-type thing? I really am interested in a more detailed viewing of the process than what this gives us.

I had no idea that the process of making this type of painting was so intricate! I'm impressed. Also, does it feel anything like doing a paint-by-number that you have to draw yourself? That's what it seems like.

This is pretty cool C: I like seeing an artist's process and I feel like I've learned something here, so thank you. ^^ Your portraits really capture people, they're so alive in emotion and likeness.

Do you make your own palette or do you pick it from the ref? I'm curious because of how you laid out the colors initially. Either way, it's incredible. I'm still incredibly inexperienced when it comes to painting in color.

You're right, the process is absolutely fascinating. I'm caught on the details in his neck and how perfect the texture is on his clothes. It's absolutely mind blowing. How long do these portraits usually take you to make?

Thanks so much...! This one took me about 10 hours maybe? They are all a bit different. The Sam one only took a couple hours.

Absolutely incredible work! Would you mind telling me, how did you do the initial sketch so accurately? Did you use a grid or some other way of measuring, or did you just do it by eye? That's the part I have the most trouble with; after I put in the details, I would discover that the eyes are too far apart, or the nose is too long, etc., and I would spend a long time fixing and readjusting, all because my sketch was off.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AmandaTolleson In reply to Outly [2011-11-21 23:00:01 +0000 UTC]

I measure and mark some critical points (literally just dots) and then eyeball it. And yeah those points are really critical.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AmandaTolleson In reply to Annachuu [2011-11-21 23:00:35 +0000 UTC]

Haha! It's several layers of carefully but randomly placed squiggles of various shades of skin tone and grays and some other colors. I don't know how else to explain it. It just. Happens. haha
