The downside of hyper realism, I suppose. Thanks for posting, it was interesting to see your process.

Would you ever consider doing a video-type thing? I really am interested in a more detailed viewing of the process than what this gives us.

This is pretty cool C: I like seeing an artist's process and I feel like I've learned something here, so thank you. ^^ Your portraits really capture people, they're so alive in emotion and likeness.

Do you make your own palette or do you pick it from the ref? I'm curious because of how you laid out the colors initially. Either way, it's incredible. I'm still incredibly inexperienced when it comes to painting in color.

You're right, the process is absolutely fascinating. I'm caught on the details in his neck and how perfect the texture is on his clothes. It's absolutely mind blowing. How long do these portraits usually take you to make?

Thanks so much...! This one took me about 10 hours maybe? They are all a bit different. The Sam one only took a couple hours.

Absolutely incredible work! Would you mind telling me, how did you do the initial sketch so accurately? Did you use a grid or some other way of measuring, or did you just do it by eye? That's the part I have the most trouble with; after I put in the details, I would discover that the eyes are too far apart, or the nose is too long, etc., and I would spend a long time fixing and readjusting, all because my sketch was off.

I measure and mark some critical points (literally just dots) and then eyeball it. And yeah those points are really critical.

How the hell do you create the stubble effect?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AmandaTolleson In reply to Allons-yEveryone [2011-11-21 23:00:57 +0000 UTC]
It's several layers of carefully but randomly placed squiggles of various shades of skin tone and grays and some other colors. I don't know how else to explain it. It just. Happens. haha
