Description Man, I havent used a pencil in years. And after this, I remember why I put them down. Theyre so bloody difficult to work with!

I sat down and I planned on making this a straightfoward pencil portrait, no paint, no cheating, but well, I got frustrated, and I missed my colour so damn much, hence, the hair.

Its the same picture Ive been drawing/painting, I know, but this is simply practice, so I figured Id stick with something simple. Ill probably do this in acrylic too. And pen. And everything else til you all get sick of it.

Anyway, drawn on my crappy Strathmore paper (btw to all you pencil geniuses, any suggestions on what paper to use?) with 8B woodless graphite, 6B carbon pencil, 2 pencil and 8B staedtler pencil. Oh, and of course with my trusty watercolours.

Man, Ive got a long way to go with this medium. And I really need to learn patience for doing hair.

I'm amazed that you used such dark pencils to make this come out so beautifully. I generally find that working with lighter pencils in layers helps when working with graphite. I usually use Bristol or Illustration board, but I find that charcoal paper can make things turn out pretty neat, too. My best advice is to experiment with lots of different things and figure out what you like best.

Thank you. The reason I dont use lighter pencils is because I dont own any. Well, I think Ive got one or two, but theyre of poor quality. Unlike your advice, which I will take to heart. Thanks again.

The way you dealt with the pencil textures makes this look incredibly real, yet the color reminds that it is hand done. Fantastic combo IMHO. This is great!

Oh, you have hands down the greatest avatar I've ever seen!

Though it is a really spiffy picture, don't get me wrong there, and is very well done, but it...almost seems out of character. He's still hot, though. ^.~

Well, maybe it is more of a personal opinion, but he looks angry in this picture (but still hot *wink*), and, from movies, of course, he doesn't seem like he can get really angry. Of course, he probably does in real life, and you portrayed it well, but...yeah. You know what I mean? Maybe...?

Try Bristol... it's really sturdy so it can withstand alot of pressure and building upon but has a smooth fine texture...it's awsome for smooth, fine detail..... hope that helps

sometimes i get kind of sick of the overload of photo-realistic work... i really appreciate and respect it, but where is the creativity? here photo-realism met the abstract. it's so fresh and unique and so original. great work.

I think this drawing's wonderful! Why do you degrade yourself? it is so damn good! and I like how you use watercolour to finish his hair, very stylish.

As for paper suggestion, I'm using smooth watercolour paper, it works well for me

excellent. could easily be mistaken for a photo, very nicely detailed, shaded. a thicker paper might bring it from damn good to just !!!WOW!!!...strathmore sketchbook stuff (70-100lb) doesnt allow alot of buildup of the lead. the eyes are perfect.
