Description This image, first of all, is totally dedicated to , who plays the only Ciel I have ever been able to bear Props to you, lady!

Ciel is ordering that Lau "take care of" you. Run. Run fast. This is what danger looks like.

"This is what I brought you,
This you can keep
This is what I brought,
You may forget me
I promise to depart,
Just promise one thing:
Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep

This is what I brought you,
This you can keep
This is what I brought,
You may forget me
I promise you my heart,
Just promise to sing:
'Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep'

Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep

This is what I thought:
I thought, 'you need me'
This is what I thought,
So think me naive
I promise you a heart
You promised to keep

Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep

Kiss my eyes and lay me to
Sleep"
~AFI

Anyone ever notice Ciel takes for granted, rather to excess, that Lau will do the dirty work for him? If it's too trivial for Sebastian, too in need of reliable results for Undertaker, and too unrefined for himself, it gets dumped on Lau, Ciel's personal trash taker-outer. And Lau, a pragmatist, a salesman, and a Chinaman in xenophobic imperialist Great Britain, has to grin and bear it, like some combination of whore, court jester, and personal assassin.

Yes, it annoys me a little. But I take comfort in the fact that Lau profits from his jolly self-effacement, and is permitted to remain a free man in an unwelcoming society. Not that I condone the illegal opium trade, but LOL.

I think I might have been the only one unsurprised at the fact that Lau finally drew a line during the events of season one, episode 20, and said "ENOUGH, I'm tired of being a mere pawn, it's boring and degrading." Wonder if that'll ever happen in the manga. Not sure I want it to. Toboso isn't, after all, known for her mercy. However considering Lau has never liked Undertaker, Undertaker has never liked Lau, and Lau is the one who tipped Ciel off to the zombie boat of DOOMZ which....Undertaker has a lot of...erhem...STOCK...in...I'm just waiting for Undertaker to casually chop off one of Lau's various limbs and members....

For me, I like to clear all the pervy fanon speculation that every single adult character in the Kuro cast secretly lusts for Ciel. After all, you all know how I loathe shoutacon and lolicon, so anyone who feels differently, head somewhere else for yer kicks . Instead, I like to see Lau and Ciel's relationship as an ever tenuous platonic friendship, and strident business relationship, between two men, one in his twenties and the other still a preteen, who endured significant trauma as little boys, but who deal with it daily in polar opposite ways. One dreams and dissociates, the other self-deprives and obsesses. But both were profoundly changed by horrific childhood events, and in some way that's what keeps them working together despite somewhat continuous mutual irritation.

I think a very revealing sort of...central nugget of their relationship....was when Lau had Ranmao kill the Wests even when Ciel ordered that he not do so. Lau wasn't just protecting his own interests there; he made a remark that the Wests were likely to commit offenses against Ciel over and over, and that Ciel was still "too soft," but that it was alright, he "found [Ciel's] boyish side lovable" [Volume V]. In other words, Ciel is poignant to Lau, a being with a "lovely" dark resolve and strength (like himself) [Volume II], but still in many ways very childlike and innocent...something Lau is interested in protecting, as he was unable to protect himself (or perhaps as he still does, through opium use and womanizing).
