Description 'Bird Interactions' contest by traditional art winner!!! : [link]

I tried to transmit a protecting interaction placing the mother in the main focus, she is a shield that protects the little ducks placed on a more camouflaged area.

Someone reminded to me the ducks I had long ago, unfortunately they were buried or eaten by a fox. I thought it would be a good idea bring them back to life with graphite .
I tried dry brushing for the background, good feelings but I think it could be better.

Amazing work as usual. Sorry to hear about the poor ducks though :/ The detail you put on the mama ducks feathers is just mystifying. That someone can have the patience to draw the different shades of the feathers is just awe inspiring to me. I like that for some reason the mama duck is more clearer then the baby ducks and shows the viewer that she is protecting her babies. The details you put on the baby ducks were amazing to. i would change the duck that is facing away though. The other baby ducks look great except for one it looks like is cut off by the other if that makes any sense.

First of all this is a phenomenal piece. It caught my eye right away. I do love the detail, the mother duck especially, and you took time to put detail in the weeds. Which makes me agree with you on the background. I would not have dried brushed it. I would have used the same technique with the background but with less detail. It just makes it look like you got tired of it and just wanted to finish it. (I know this isn't the case.) The realism is outstanding. It almost looks like a photograph. May I make a suggestion, i would put a little more shadowing between the ducklings just to give them more depth. shadowing goes a long way, maybe just a tad in between each leaf and feather. Overall a great piece. Good job. look forward to your next one.

Thanks for taking the time to write the critique, I appreciate your words. I must say I agree with the shadowing between the ducklings maybe more depth would be good but I still think dry brushing was the right choice though I still have to improve . Helpful critique!

You should think more highly of your artwork. This is amazing! Your attention to detail is phenominal and the style it out of this world! I really love how you didn't leave out any little detail all the way to the adults fine shadowing. Dry brushing the background was a great decision. If it would have had any other type of detail then it would draw the eye away from the rest of the drawing. Again, I thought this was a photograph until I clicked on the link. If you haven't tried selling your artwork by now, I really think you should consider it. Great work.

Thank you! It's caused by the sepia tone of the paper in this one.

Question, what kind of surface are you working. IE. what paper or board surface do you prefer for your pieces?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AmBr0 In reply to Baron-Engel [2012-08-28 20:38:33 +0000 UTC]

I'm testing different kinds of paper but this one is soft Bristol 250 g/m^2. I also use Canson Lineal sketch 160 g/m^2 similar to Bristol but with sepia tone, Canson Basik 130 g/m^2, also Derwent 110 gsm and HahnemΓΌelle Sketch 90 g/m^2 good for charc. but thin.

I think it depends on the style or idea you want that graphite looks like. I think Canson Basik suits well with Merida drawing style and some animal sketches, and on the other hand Bristol for realism, soft and blended portraits.

granulated to softest: Basik, HahnemΓΌelle, Lineal,ο»Ώ Bristol

Hope it helps!
